Shifter knob 1800

There is a rattling inside my shifter knob. How have people fixed this?

    I've done this successfully on at least three cars.

    Remove the shifter and disassemble it. There's a circlip and a spring under the knob -- take those off and the concentric shafts slide apart. Coat the inner shaft with bearing grease and put everything back together. Sometimes the spring weakens with age, and shimming it with an additional washer or two can also help stop any buzzing or rattling.

    Eric is quite right about the heater drain tube. You will be able to remove the shifter by lifting the carpet from the rear. You don't have to pull it out from under the heater box.

      This will be easy to do; thanks for the great tip. I've removed the tunnel carpeting so often I don't even snap it in place anymore.

        Before disassembling the shifter mechanism today I moved the shifter knob about 3/16" higher on the shifter - rattling gone. If only all of the other repair tasks were so simple.

    Hello,

    There are over a dozen parts on a 1800 shift handle for the 1961-1969 models.

    Some of which, when loose or worn can cause vibrations.

    So you need to do a thorough inspection of the components.

    FYI, when you attempt to access the shifter mounting bolts, be aware that there is a drain hose under the heater box that can be damaged when you try to move the carpeting that covers the transmission tunnel.

    Unfortunately, Volvo did not put a slot in the carpeting so that the carpeting could be slid past the hose, but a hole.

      The rattling originates directly inside the shifter knob. If I lightly rest my hand on the knob when it's rattling the sound is gone. Pulling the knob, I see the spring mechanism for the reverse lockout. I'm thinking of lightly wrapping something around the spring but wondering first if others have dealt with this annoying trait.
      In March all of the shifter parts were on the bench and looked good.

        Hello,

        Do you know if the shift handle housing was ever rechromed?

        I ask because there is a section of plastic tubing inside that section to insult the inner shaft.

        And if it was not removed before chroming, it may have deteriorated or fallen out.

            Hello,

            FYI, the only way we have been able to properly install the heater box drain tube requires the removal and disassembling of the heater box.

            Most people do not know that there is a plastic insert shaped like a small funnel that has to be inserted into the top of the drain hose after the drain hose is installed into the hole.

            And this can only be accomplished when the 2 halves of the heater box are separated.

              How important is this drain? I'm not ready to investigate the bowels of the heater, though I did remove the blower and clean out the nesting materials recently. I'd like to remove the heater as part of a longer list of tasks.

                Hello,

                Under normal circumstances, the drain hose is not that important.

                The drain hose is there to keep coolant from entering the cabin in case the heater core develops a leak.

                Rain or water from washing can sometimes get into the heater box, but that is usually due to plugged air intake drains.

                The air intake drains can be accessed by removing the air intake grille and plastic insert in front of the windshield.

                  Clearing those drains was a job done earlier this summer. There was so much gunk compacted in the cowl bowl that I didn't realize drains were there until someone here pointed it out.
