Heat OFF but still hot...why??? 200

My 1984 Volvo 245 is having yet another quirky issue.

I have the heat completely turned OFF, and fan completely turned OFF, but HOT air still is working it's way out of the vents.????

The car is NOT overheating, coolant level is FINE and the hot air does not smell of anything funky (nor is it moist or off in any way.)

What's up???

    All good replies to your problem but, back in the day, when all heaters were cable actuated, the simplest place to begin would be to access the heater valve and loosen the cable clamp. Try to move the valve by hand and close it all the way. If heat continues to come out then, yes, you're well and truly screwed. If the heat is shut off, it's a matter of cable adjustment. However, there is a reason why there are so many forum questions about heater valves failing.

    If the other suggestions don't work you could install a new ball valve over on the passenger side footwell on the heater hose. This would be a manually operated fix but much easier than replacing the existing valve.

    There's a chance this is a simple fix, but it is a small chance given the age of the car.

    First, be sure the control cable hasn't slipped, and your temperature setting lever is indeed pulling the heater control as far as it goes. Mike and Jeffrey have already made this suggestion.

    Second, try to adjust the thermostat compensation. This is the fix that has a small chance of working unless the heater valve has been replaced sometime since '84. heater valve adjustment

    If no joy, temporary comfort can be had by attaching a plastic hose clamp on one of the interior heater hoses to cut off the flow of coolant.

    Those are the easy things. Replacing the valve is the knuckle buster and fairly pricey, for a long term proper solution.

    Either the cable is no longer actuating the heater control valve or the vale itself failed. Pretty common issue.

      Do either of these issues equate anything more than an uncomfortably warm drive? I mean, will not fixing it cause the car to break down??

      You are going to have to crawl into the driver footwell and check the connection of the temp cable to the valve. This is much more likely on the later plastic valves, which just leak after awhile. the brass ones are pretty robust, but it could be leaking.
      I guess to test that you would disconnect the outlet hose from the valve and start the car and see if anything is leaking through.

        Thanks for the rapid replies; much appreciated.

        However...I wouldn't know where to begin with this and neither would my husband. We would like to be able to do this ourselves, if it's not ridiculously difficult. As I've posted on here before, neither of us are mechanically inclined however we did manage to fix our headlight switch thanks to the help here and some willpower to figure out how to do it on our own and avoid spending $$ on a labour hours at some repair shop!!

        1) is this hard to fix? could you 'walk us through it' in laymans terms?

        2) worst case scenario, what would not fixing it entail? would the car break down? will it blow up? or just remain very, very hot?

          This one is a lot more involved that the headlight switch.

          Lets start simple with some troubleshooting. Is there resistance as you more the temp level back and forth. Does the resistance feel the same as the last time it worked correctly? If it feels the same as when it last worked it is unlikely that the cable connection is the issue. If you remove the driver side kick panel of the center console, you can see the valve way up there and its cable connection.

          Your options at that point are some serious dash deconstruction, partial draining of the coolant, replacing the valve and getting the dash back together...then fixing all the little things you forgot to put back together correctly...or, putting a simple plumbing ball valve in the engine compartment on one of the heater hoses that you can manually shut off when you want no chance of heat.

          If I remember correctly, you depend on this vehicle for transportation. For a first-timer this is a half-day affair if you do not need to go to the tool store. The skills required are not high, but patience, some tool and time are required.
