New Volvo Big Problem 200 1988

I just got this 88 to replace my 85, it had no timing belt on it as the previous owner wanted to replace the cam seal which was leaking really bad but didn't have the right tools, anyways the work that was done to it yesterday by myself. cam seal, crank seal, timing belt, tensioner and waterpump, thermostat and new flame trap old one was clogged, had 3 holes left open. anyways car makes a loud metal to metal sqwell, at first i though it was rod bearings but today i took off the belts and now the sound is gone, a/c has already been bypassed so all we have left is power steering alternator or water pump, i can turn both the water pump and alternator by hand and don't see any problems. still the noise is really loud and i would like to figuere out how to get rid of it.

If the balance is slipping the friction will heat it up so you can't touch it. Another test is to cause it to slip at full turn, but I guess you have undone the power steering?

well right now i got all the belts off, iam gonna try to spin the water pump with a drill with the engine off to see if it makes noise, would the harmonic ballancer stop making noise when nothings connected to it?

You could test by creatively applying a little big of friction to the pulley of the harmonic balancer. Due to safety concerns, I will not suggest methods but I think you can figure it out....

      Probably .... 200 1988

re: "...would the harmonic ballancer stop making noise when nothings connected to it?..."

Probably. There ought to be enough friction remaining to cause it to slip ONLY if a load was on the outer ring while being driven by the inner ring; otherwise, the outer ring should follow silently.

But this is a big concern, so make sure of your "test" (the others gave good suggestions, e.g., chalk marking) results because if the harmonic balancer does separate, there are reports on this forum of the freed outer half chewing up the timing belt cover and in other cases the radiator.

i had no chalk so i put a line of red paint put on the belts to the water pump and alt and ran it for a bit, did not see anything move and the line is in the same spot, i should have ran it first with the old water pump before putting the new one on, its a GMB from IPD.

For the chalk/paint test, you need a load on it to show .... 200 1988

If you're trying to check it with a chalk or paint mark, it won't reveal a problem if it isn't driving any belts because there's no resistance or load on the outer half. You need to have a belt on that dampener (pulley) to hold back the outer half while the inner half is driven by the crankshaft -- only then will the slippage occurs (if it occurs) and reveal a problem.

Put a belt back on and try it.

well i had someone come by and look at it, i guess its the alternator making the loud noises, if you put the screw driver to it you can hear it, so far i haven't had anything on the balancer move since i put a line of red paint on it so i think its okay. I guess i either need to get a new alternator or see if i can swap the one on my 85 into it.

and thank you all for the help! really appreciate it!

Put all the belts back on and see if it separates. If it doesn't the the balancer is probably OK. If it squeals then it is probably the bearings in the alternator or water pump.

You can also look at the rubber layer on the balancer, if it is bad you will be able to see it.

Mark across the two metal pieces of the harmonic balancer with chalk or paint. Start the engine, rev it up to make it squeal, stop the engine and look at the marks. If they separated you found the problem.

This may be caused by a separating/separated harmonic balancer (crank pulley). The balancer is made of two pieces (center and outside belt pulley), the two pieces are held together by rubber between them. This rubber wears out and results in a heck of a squeal. If this is the case, the balancer needs to be replaced.

On the alt, water pump, and ps pump, with the belts off, turn the shafts by hand and see if you feel a rough bearing. Also, move the shafts up and down, if there is slop, that indicates a worn out pump or alt.

I'm think that perhaps it is the water pump. See if the fan has any up or down movement when you pull on the blades, or, if you have the fan off, turn the pump flange and feel for a dry bearing.

    Regards,
