OK,you all convinced me, now where to buy an OEM cat back 900 1994

If you hadn't followed my adventure in my last post, I finally had to agree that it was easier and more cost effective just to replace the complete system.
I found a Staria system for $189.00 at FCP but from what I have heard here, they are not close to the quality of OEM . I thought that Tasco was OEM and near the same price, but they only had the parts listed separately. I didn't bother adding it up, but wouldn't be surprised if it approached %400.00. I will call them tomorrow to confirm. I also checked out Beachmont Volvo in Ohio, but their parts page was under construction. I do have a Staria system on my 240 and it's definitely superior to the part store Wagner exhaust systems. Should Staria still be in the running considering 400 dollars for OEM is definitely out of the question.
I heard Bosal systems are near the same quality as OEM, but haven't located a source yet. Suggestions and sources are definitely welcome...

One more bit of information - I checked around, and got this response from Scott at EuroCampers. com:

> The P-Trap is no longer available through Winnebago. The part # is 053770-01-000. I would recommend checking ebay or other internet sites to find it.

Can anybody confirm the above? Is my only option to dumpster-dive? :)

Thanks,

Where did you get your new P-trap?

Online I see these for Vanagons, but nothing that says explicitly it's for an EVC.

Are they indeed compatible?

Thanks,

Tascaparts.com internet price for ''kit'' is $141.83... EDITed at 9:31 EST... 900 1994

The Volvo part # for the "Exhaust Kit" is 272259 (superseding 272260).

The OE list Price is $220.23.

The Tasca (not Tasco) price for 272259 is:
$220.23(list) $0.00 (no core charge) $141.83 Also needed is Mounting Kit #272298:
MOUNTING KIT $34.46 $0.00 $22.20
plus shipping of course

Call 1-915-3141 or go to tascaparts.com and open an account.

You can verify the list price HERE at the Volvo Parts Webstore.

EDIT Note:
The original Kit #272660 was for the "long life" version. Apparently that kit has been dropped, leaving only the "aluminized" version #272559, which I suspect is made by Starla/Walker (just a guess).

You can find this info on the Volvo Parts Webstore link above by clicking on the reduced "Product Images", then scrolling down below the enlarged image to the top of the part number list.

If it is made by starla/walker for Volvo it is clearly with different dies and assembly procedures. I once had the kits side by side in my living room (due to FCP accidentally including an entire aftermarket exhaust kit in the box with my shocks/struts), and the difference in metal thickness, welds, and weight of mufflers was dramatic. To say nothing of the quality control issues...

Dear vacuumhead,

Hope you're well. TascA Volvo can supply a "kit", a box with an entire cat-back parts set. You should call them and ask for the "cat back exhaust kit" for a 940.
If you're in the Midwest, then Borton Volvo (Minneapolis) might be a better option, as shipping costs will be lower.

Starla and Bosal likely won't be as durable as the Volvo brand item. As with rubber items - where the mix of ingredients isn't disclosed, but definitely governs strength and durability - the materials and assembly methods for the mufflers and silences can vary a lot, but not in obvious ways.

If you plan to own the car for a long time - or if you really dislike doing under-car work - definitely get the Volvo brand item.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Call Jon Reynolds at Borton Volvo in Minneapolis, tell him Brickboard and Steve sent you, and to price out an OEM exhaust kit. My last one was about $200. They ship same day. 1.800.328.7114 or parts at borton dot com

Thanks Steve, how long ago did you purchase this exhaust from them. From what I have seen prices have sky rocketed as of late. Regardless, will call them tomorrow..

Maybe 18 months ago... Still, the Volvo OEM system was cheaper than any aftermarket alternative at Borton.

As I suspected prices have skyrocketed. Bortons quote was $358.28 for part number 272261 and I did mention the Brickboard and your name. He did say that the only part in the system that was Walker was the cat.

Make sure you get the right part number. I cross checked the 272261 kit in Tasca and the list price is indeed $358; they sell it for $231.

Steve; Thank You for checking that for me. I did get through to Tasco on their local phone number. As suspected, their parts dept is closed on Monday. I will recheck your source on Monday as well. When I did call yesterday I forgot to mention the Volvo rep's name that you provided. Maybe that will make a difference.

Dear vacuumhead,

Hope you're well. There must be a crossed-wire (even though the exhaust system, to the rear of the catalytic converter, has no electrical parts).

There is no catalytic converter in the "cat-back" exhaust system. The term "cat-back" refers to all exhaust system parts, AFTER the catalytic converter.

It might be that the Borton rep simply wanted to convey that Walker makes catalytic converters for Volvo. This could be true: I've never had to replace a catalytic converter, so have not seen what markings are on a Volvo-supplied replacement unit.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Sorry for the confusion. Just wanted to convey that the Barton's parts man noted that from the info he had, the complete exhaust system is Volvo made, except the cat, which I have already replaced.
Just talked to a Tech rep at FCP Euro/Groten. A few years back I purchased a Staria exhaust system from FCP for my 240 that was by far superior to the previous Walker system that lasted less than a year. The tech admitted that the current Staria system that FCP sells is not of the same quality to what I purchased then.
So, do I throw 189 dollars out the window if I need to replace this system next year or should I pay 358 dollars from Bartoms that claims it made by Volvo.
I wish Tasco would answer their phones. Perhaps they are still recouping from the hurricane.
The musical chairs these manufactures are playing with quality is more than just frustrating.

Volvo used to sell the hanging hardware (rubber hangers, etc.) as a separate kit for about $15-20. Be sure to clarify when ordering.
