dwell/tach meter questions? 120-130

Hi,

I have a 9 volt battery powered dwell/tach meter that only has two wire contacts( + and - )
Do I need more connection wires to get a proper reading?
I know this is a super basic question. I just cant find the basic info for where to connect the wires.
In the dwell meter booklet the diagram for a typical ignition coil has both a positive and negative contact nut for the wires to attach to. MIne only has one nut, which I'm assuming is the negative. The other would be the wire coming out of the ignition coil that connects to the top of the distributor cap.

My friend had explained it to me but I have forgotten. All I can remember from his advice was that one of the wires needed to attach to the stud where the condensor is fastened to the side of the distributor. Perhaps that is an inaccurate memory. Nevertheless, from what I thought I remembered, I hooked up the red wire clip to the one existing nut on the ignition coil and the black wire to the stud that the condensor is fastened to. I did not get any reading.

Thoughts?

Thanx,

J

the black goes to the negative side of the coil the red to 12v+ either the positive side of the coil(which original coils on 122 is not accessible) or the battery positive terminable

You hooked it up backward. Black ALWAYS goes to ground.
I'll bet if you hook the red wire to the coil or distributor and the black to ground
    it will work as advertised.
(Remember that although it is the COIL negative, when the points are OPEN there is 12 volts there.)
