Questions: re 1990 240 a/c system 200 1990

I looked at a 1990 240 today. White with tan interior, sunroof, great tires, no flaws on body. Only 67k miles and absolutely perfect. I noticed the a/c temp at idle was subpar - is the '90 model without the second fan? Can one install such a fan? I saw one on IPD, but it stated it was for a 740. I would rather have more miles and cold air from a 91-93 if this '90 cannot be retrofitted. It was 95 degrees in Nashville today and will be like that for the next 6 weeks.

Questions: re 1990 240 a/c system 200 1990

I assume in 89-90 they were still using R-12. So the A/C systems were bad even with R-12? Was '91 the year they switched to better a/c systems?

Questions: re 1990 240 a/c system 200 1990

I replaced everything on the AC system on my 1990 including changing over to the 1993 parallel flow condensor and more efficient evaporator. I made all new hoses and installed a new compressor. My AC works better now than a 1990 ever did and I haven't even intalled a pusher fan yet. If you want to improve the system it can be done. Let me know if you want additional details.

Questions: re 1990 240 a/c system 200 1990

I believe even the '91-92 had R12 originally but I might be wrong. It is less about the gas the car was designed for an more about the sizing and the system used.

With the exception of the compressor going from a York piston type to a rotary, not much changed on the system since it was a dealer-installed option in 1975. It was undersized then.

In short, you need a '91 or newer with the silver, GM looking accumulator near the firewall. This system is also, from what I read, extremely sensitive to freon charge quantity so the only way to have it "topped up" accurately is to have it evacuated and filled by weight.

Questions: re 1990 240 a/c system 200 1990

The 90 AC system was sub par even with a pusher fan added in front of the condenser. Roughly four months after we bought our 89 244 new (same system in 90), we took it back to the dealer three or four times due to poor AC performance, they checked it out and claimed it was performing to factory specs. The last time we took it in for that, the mechanic told me: "That's as good as it gets".

In short a weak AC system... period.

A good way to look at is that idle will never be better than it is at about 35 mph. A perfectly functioning system should be "adequate" but not inspired.

My 1990 has a half-baked conversion to R134a from the PO and it works well as a dehumidifier but poorly as an air cooler.
