Intermittent SRS light flashing on 200 1992

Admission up front, I've only had a chance to chase the SRS power feed back to the yellow/black wire going to the ignition switch but no further. This weekend I'll dig into it further.

The symptoms are that after 5 to 10 minutes of driving, the SRS light comes on for a few seconds and then goes off. If I drive over a bump it repeats the SRS light on for a few more seconds. Checking for codes at the SRS test connector reveals no codes. This makes me think there is a corroded or loose connection for the power or ground to the SRS module.

Any experience on what "connection commonly" results in this condition? Nope, sorry for us, removing the SRS bulb is not a solution.

Thanks in advance!

Transit Wind, thank you for the info, your advice sent me down the right road. The problem was not at the orange "extension cord" end under the carpet, it was at the other end on top of the steering column. It was necessary to remove the top cover from the steering column to get to the connector that plugs into the clock spring. Once unplugged, I cycled the connector a few times and then applied DeoxIT to the gold plated contacts. Once plugged in I went for a 2 hour test drive and the problem is officially gone.

Note that many folks think gold contacts do not oxidize... they do... just not as fast a tin! I also applied some DeoxIT to the connector pair of contacts behind the carpet.

One last note on airbag safety. Once you go to start the car after working on the airbag system, do like the pros and sit in the passenger seat when turning the key! That way if it does go off it won't get you!

Thanks!

Bump? 200 1992

Admission up front: We've had four airbag Volvos (combined age 80 years) with no glitches -- so no experience or list of "common" problems. Must be the gold!

Anyhow, this post is useful as a bump, but not the kind that makes your light come on. Your approach makes sense to me.

Art,

If I recall correctly, the SRS module and aux power unit for it live under the passenger side front seat, is that correct? All I have are the schematics and not the component location diagrams for the 92....

Thanks!

Bump? 200 1992

I chased one down once. There is a connector plug under the carpet on the center slanted area between the dash and drivers seat. I pulled the drivers seat and lifted the carpet. Pushing it together and taping it for the future with electrical tape. I bet if you felt for a small lump in that area (drivers side of the gear shifter) you might see the light flicker or stop. (Sorry just woke up and I can't think too well)

I transplanted SRS to my '86 body, so I've been there, although my memory is not perfect. I believe the transmission tunnel connector is the most likely culprit, as the connection to the control box under the seat is (I think I remember) bolted in place.

By the way, to do that transplant, I had the junkyard cut out the part of the floorpan that had the mounting bracket for the control box welded to it. Then I bolted that floorpan/bracket assembly firmly in place on my car's floorpan. Of course, I also had to cut an appropriately-sized window in the top of the crosspiece under my seat, etc.

So far (several years), I haven't done a crash test, but the self-test has been indicating that all is just fine.
