Heater Control Valve -New Style (Plastic) vs. Old Style (Metal) 200

What do people think of the newer style ones?

I need to replace the heater control valve (blowing hot), fan motor, and clutch cable in my wife's car. I know the older style is no longer available (I see IPD sells one for $160, but give information on the newer style for it?), but I have a good used one.

It's a lot of work, and not really up to do the job twice. If the newer style is as good or better, I would spring for a new one.

Paul

Check out the heater valve available at wagonmaster.com. Once again, I have no connection to the product or it's designer, but it looks like a nice fix for 240 heater valves.

That valve only shuts the water down manually. I do not see that it has any kind of heat modulation method for a hundred bucks.

C this be done internally somehow? No, mention of it or any specifications what so ever.

I don't care for them personally. I think the change to a completely mechanical setup is a good one. The capillary tube is probably the most problematic part of the old one. I just don't care for making the swap from the old style to the new. Despite the directions, it's not a simple matter.

I spent forever scrounging up about a dozen of the Ranco replacement valves a couple of years ago. Probably could have found more, but diminishing returns. I have only one left at this point. I'm thinking of saving it for a museum.

I was so disappointed in the 92-93 valve, after doing it in my wagon, that I've developed a bolt in replacement that I'll have to market, probably in about a month. The prototype is done, and it is easy to install, right down to connecting the existing hoses without too much trouble.

Hi. I have been driving (suffering) for two years in Central Florida with the heater control valve not working. The A/C has never worked, and I can suffer with that, but I am just not willing to die again this year with the heat forcing its way in to the cabin, past the closed vents, etc. I saw the "new kit" on IPD USA for roughly $52, and they offer the old style for $178 appx. Yikes. All of this leading to interest in your saying you are creating yet another. How would we access that? I drive a 1992 Volvo 240 Wagon.

        It looks like this:

It sells for $100 plus shipping. I have no connection with the seller, but it looks like a nice product.

Either way it is not a fun job, you might find it a bit easier by taking out the front driver seat first. I would replace the it with what is currently installed it will make the job more straight forward.

Another option is to locate a new ball valve on the passenger side of the footwell. Easier to install but you will need to regulate the heat from this remote valve.

Or I can take a pair of vice grips and clamp off the heater hose, as a mechanic down here has twice insisted is the best way to deal with it! (haha?)
