1993 960 wagon VS 1993 740 900 1993

I am considering buying a 1993 960 wagon w/100k miles. I own a '92 740 non turbo and love how simple it is and the 24 mpg I get. What am I getting into with the 960. I previously owned a '96 v90 and it had a lot of expensive problems. Is the '93 going to be any better? Is it more like my 740 with 2 more cylinders?

"Is it more like my 740 with 2 more cylinders?"

No. It is going to more like '96 V90 with an older interior and none of incremental improvements that come as a model ages. A 960 and a V90 are the same car the way the 850 and (early) V70 are the same car.

That being said, I too am often tempted by the extremely low prices for 960's compared to comparable red block cars. As i am a die-hard RWD fan, except for the occasional flirtation with AWD or a Saab 900/9000, so the 960/V90 appeal to me more than any other "newer" Volvo.

When I bought my 1997 965 it was only after some years of perusing the BB posts on 960's of all vintages.

A large number of changes were made beginning with the 1995 or 1996 model years. Many were in the engine (improved timing belt, and others) and some are body changes.

I personally would stay away from any 960 older than the 1996 model. After that there were some changes, but relatively minor. Even between the 1997's and the 1998 V/90 S/90 some changes were made even though 1998 is their last year.

My 1997 965 now has 204,800 miles, and my (wifemobile) S/90 has 156,400 miles. I have paid for maintenance and fair were and tear repairs. Nothing else so far.

Good Luck,

Bob

PROBLEM SOLVED!
Found a super clean 1 owner 1990 740 wagn non turbo w/117k miles. Brought it home today. Has exhaust leak in rear tailpipe and rr wiper does not work. Otherwise it is a time machine, perfectly original and clean.
I know I won't win any races with this but it is simple and inexpensive to own, and thats what I need now.
Thanks for the help!
