70' 1800e 1800 1970

I'm looking into buying a 70' 1800e and was hoping to get some tips on what to look for. There is some some "minimal" body rust on the rockers and rear wheels. I'll diffidently check the frame rails where I know there prone to rust out. It's running good, she only has 180k. I was wondering about the interior, black with red seats? Did Volvo offer something like that with these cars? There asking $3700 for it. Good Buy?

- Thanks

Just a quick addendum to what others said...

180k is quite a lot of miles for an 1800 (Yea, I know... don't go talking Irv)
If it's been well cared for/restored, sure. 180k is nothing. But service records would be nice.

Sounds to me like you're familiar with the rust issues... look carefully, none the less. That is, as others said, the biggest issue.

As for the black/red combo... pretty sure that was likely an offered combo, and it's a lovely one indeed. Though honestly, every '70 I've seen had black leather seats. But I sure as hell ain't seen them all, so I don't know. Again though, don't count on original paint and interior on a car with 180k miles.

$3700 can be a totally fair price for a good looking, good driving 1800E. It's one of the most desirable years in my opinion. $3700 ain't gonna get you a show car. An inspection by a qualified mechanic would be money well spent...

Hope it's great, hope you fall in love and give the car a good home for years to come!

Hum, driving around in these 200k plus 20 year old 240's I thought 180k was fairly low?

It's definitely in the restorable class and the asking price I think is a bit high. The frame looks clean, but there's at least two rusty spots on the body and a bad paint job that will need attention.

Thanks Matt for the info regarding the interior. I really like the combo as well, but the original blue exterior makes me dubious of the original nature of it.

My experience is that 240s are about the best car Volvo ever made from a longevity standpoint... My daily drive has 327k on it, and still running strong.

The pushrod engines just don't hold up quite as long. But, the quality of oil these days seems to be helping a lot with that... so, like I said.. if well maintained, 180k is fine. And, to be fair to B20s... my '65 1800 is at about 750k miles, a third of that is mine. And I honestly don't think there's a major part that I've not replaced, except the engine. Have never touched the engine and it's running strong.

Again, sounds like you have a good handle on judging the condition of the car you've considered. Sounds to me like a fine candidate for a driver, not so much a candidate for restoration. So, for that reason... heck. If you like the black/red, go with it!

Look for the earlier post "School me on 1800's" on April 14th. The responses are pretty good at identifying the different issues (mostly body) with the 1800.

I have the same year....in my case, the body was pretty good expect for the cross member under the radiator, and where the front portion of the frame rails where the bumper, steering box, and steering pivot knuckles attach. My current challenge (if you notice my post previous to yours), is to solve the mysteries of D-jet and I am finding that to be an "interesting learning experience".

One thing to check is the condition of the major D-jet components (Pressure Sensor, Throttle Switch, ECU....).

Take a magnet with you to check for bondo. Look VERY carefully for former repairs as well
as places that need repair now. The body is the only thing you can't replace easily.
