Steering lower U-joint 200 1991

from FAQ : "With BOTH u-joints sufficiently loosened — per screw method, plus wire brushing and oiling shaft splines — the shaft is moved (maybe "driven") upward to free the lower joint, then swung aside and moved down to free the upper joint. You may need a hammer or air impact hammer to move the lower joint and shaft upwards. Then the shaft and both joints are free to do whatever is needed at the bench."

Anyone with experience on this my question regards "moving the steering shaft upwards and swung away" .... Will that shaft actually move upwards without loosing or removing some other support? I can understand it may move a bit to the side but up? I'm about to start wacking at it after I separate the joints from the splines.

    You're in salt country, eh?

    My 245 came from Boston, and the U-joint had to come off in pieces. I tried everything (we're talking *all* the tricks) before resorting to total destruction.

    Cut the U-joint up with a hack saw into two pieces. Then use a gear puller to yank it off the steering rack and shaft. The steering shaft is hollow, so to use a gear puller, you'll need to use an appropriately sized grade 8 bolt to "pull" against.

    On the other hand, the 20+ year old U-joint slid right off the southern 1987 245 per the green book instructions.

    I have not removed a shaft completely without removing the rack, so I do not know if what you are asking is possible.

    Have you opened the splined housing up enough to get full up and down travel of the splines on either end? If so and the shaft does not have enough room to be moved you may have to lower the rack to completely remove the shaft.

      Replacing the UJoints is possible without dropping the rack but it will depend on freeing the bond the splines create and moving the U-joint assmbly up and then down and away. So if the steering shaft moved a bit it would help. I haven't got there yet .. soaking it with pb blaster now. This job may have to wait till Wed.

        job is done. Separated the u-joint from the splines on the shafts and kept them separated and loose with chisels wedged into the expansion slots while wacking away with a 3 lb hammer and a pry bar applied in the right direction.

          have used both and prefer not to hit it too hard with the hammer ... I'll find an appropiate screw to wedge and separate ... bet i can apply more actual force that way.

    when i've done these, the shaft doesn't move. i think what's meant is the joint moves up the shaft to clear the rack, then down the shaft and off. you don't want the shaft to move if you have an airbag car-you don't mention the year. i also destroy the old joint as it's being replaced. good luck, chuck.
