P130 Trim Clip Under Side Windows 120-130 1966

My chrome trim under the side windows (door and popout) has pulled out the rivets that hold it to the car. Only two of them have pulled out, so the trim is still on car. I see the correct part to hold the trim on is 192458 (plus a rivot), but was wondering if the plastic clip (679885)used on the later P130. I don't think I can rerivot the metal clip back on without taking the trim piece completely off.

I just did this job

You should just take the piece all the way off and replace all of the clips. (they are really cheap)

I just gently pried the trim off with a screwdriver and drilled out the old rivets and clips.
Make sure the trim is lined up perfectly before you press it back on and make sure the clips are situated the right way.

I think it took all of 15 minutes to do.

Are these clips spring steel? Do they rust away? What rivets did you use? Steel, stainless, aluminum? What size are the rivets?

Photobucket

I was talking about using the plastic clips instead of the metal w/ a rivet. The plastic ones have some thing like a rivet that you knock in and the trim then is pressed on over the clip. Glad that the hole doesn't need to be enlarged for the plastic clip.

have never used the plastic ones but I would imagine they are much less sturdy just by looking at them.

I used stainless steel rivets and I know they are the smaller of the two most common sizes generally used.

The clips themselves seem very sturdy.

I hit up the holes with some good rustproof paint before I put the new ones in.

If you end up going with the plastic let me know how they hold up. For all I know they might be better eh? I would drill out the holes with the proper bit anyway to clean out any debris hanging on around the inside of the body panel.

They are the same clips that hold the side trim on the 140/164 and the wheel well trim on 164.
