Mine has been working very well after a complete retrofit of a '92 system into my '87 and a switch to R134. On super hot days, it take a lot of "fan" to keep things cool, but it works. :)

Ah yes, the ol' AC don't work, what a pain and can cost a lot of money to fix. I did the ol' 2 hour drive this afternoon back home in the 92 245 with R134A and when driving a little faster than 65MPH it worked fine and the engine temp was a bit high (101F today). At 55MPH on a different stretch of road, the evaporator kept freezing up every 10 minutes blocking air flow. Turn off the AC for a while, air starts flowing and the ice melts.

The sad part is that with vinyl seats my back was soaked in sweat once I got home... I want cloth seats again!

ps. Don't leave a stick of deodorant in your parked car this time of year, it will melt and make one heck of a mess!

I was the last one in Austin, Texas to rent from Autozone, the vacuum pump and A/C gauges to install my new A/C compressor in the 86 745. They do not rent out the pumps anymore.
If you have a garage, it is really quite simple to replace the compressor, receiver-drier,VOV, and the hoses (I even did the condenser) on my 86 745. As long as you can get the pump and gauges, you should be able to feel cool air inside your car.
I know that the late 91-93 240's had a bigger system (like the 700's). The earlier 240's need to have the evaporator replaced with a bigger one from OEM volvo.
Good luck with Thermogeddon!
