1993 240 A/C compressor replacement 200 1993

The 1993 is the first year that Volvo replaced R12 with R134. On son's 1993 245,I have replaced the high pressure line from the compressor to the condenser and I had to buy the more expensive metric threaded hose. Now the compressor is hanging up it tennis shoes (going kaput). Can I use the R12 compatible compressors (1986-1992) or does the 93 compressor also have metric threaded connections? The difference in price is substantial.
Please help.
Thanks,
el raidman

    1993 240 A/C compressor replacement 200 1993

my source has 1 compressor listed-8251069 as 85-92 all 4 cyl volvos, except 85 240 turbo, along with a 36000819 for 93 up all 4 cyls with both of them being the same price, cost and list. as far as i know, the only difference in 92 and 93 is the rear plate. good luck, chuck.

Thanks, Chuck. The rear plate on the 92 (and before) has the ports for the R12 connections. I figure as long as the front and the main connections are the same, I'll use the 92 compressor on the 93. It is way cheaper in price.

FCP Groton has both for the same price, I think. I checked with Autozone and the 93 is $389 and the 92 is $299. Just because of the R12 ports on the backing plate.
both should work with the 93's system, correct? I prefer the R12 connections since I can put a retrofit R134 connector on the R12 high pressure connector and thus measure the high pressure side with the red-colored gauge and the low pressure with the blue-colored gauge.

never having hung a 93 compressor on a 92, or vice-versa, i believe that's the only difference. don't know about the threads for the hoses. i do know the part numbers are different for the hoses, 91-92 compared to 93. it's also possible the az 92 comp is dedicated to r12 only and using it for 134 would void the warranty and the stripped threads from the 134 adapter would give that away. i can't take chances on bets, i have to be sure the replacement is correct. good luck, chuck.

              Thanks, Chuck.
I have replaced this A/C compressor with a rebuilt one a few years ago and I do not remember that it had metric threads on the connections. If I am correct, the metric threading is on the ends of the hoses. The connections for the compressor are standard threading.
Actually, I prefer the R12 design (dump out the R12 oil and install 4 oz of PAG oil) and son's 93 245 should be good to go.

In my shop we use the early compressor as it is more reliable as it gets older. ( I don't know what the difference is internally but there is a difference). We always have the suction hose rebuilt with a 134 port fitting installed by our local radiator shop, always under $70.00 and if it is a high mileage car the pressure hose is also rebuilt with a 134 port fitting added. We want no comebacks. Be careful of the compressor brand as not all rebuilts are created equally. Auto Zone, PEP boys Discount auto Etc. are famous with independent shops here in Central Florida, for selling poor quality rebuilt A/C compressors, Alternator and Starters. Go to your local independent Volvo repair shop and find out the brand he uses and his price. You may save money in the long run. Ester is the oil of choice when draining out R12 oil. PAG is intended for compressors originally filed with PAG. I have no idea if it makes a real difference in the long run but I try to stick with recommendations.
