M46 Overdrive solenoid click 200 1984

So, friend with a '84 244, overdrive is not working.

I can hear and feel the solenoid click, so I know all the electronics are in order. But I don't know how noticable that click should be. Sort of feels like it might be stuck or something. Yea, click, but does not feel like it engages anything mechanically.

Took for a test drive up to ~55mph, overdrive light on, got back for the looksee. When feeling for the click, I noticed the solenoid was almost too hot to touch, but the overdrive unit itself was not as hot..

Does sticky solenoid sound like a possibility to you experts?

Thanks in advance as always!

Sticky would not allow the solenoid to make a click.

Put an amp meter in line an measure amp draw. Should be no more than 2.4 amps. anyting more and something is wrong.

Is there any of what feels like slipping as shifts to second gear with 3 and 4 slsuggish? The aformentioned are an indicator that the overdrive is on from the start of the vehicle.

Is the solenoid getting power in other gears than 4th with the dash light on? The 84 relay will not close to oewer the solenoid unless the 4th gear switch is closed. Any other condition indicates a problem electrically.

After all electricla issues are wrung out, the most probable cause of no overdrive is worn actuating piston rings.

To fix, overdrive has to be removed from transmission. See link below:

      Thanks Duane,
I will check the items you mentioned. But I am fairly certain all electrically is fine. 4th gear switch definitely right, and it's definitely not engaged all the time (I know that feeling).

This was a recent transmission install from a donor car. Overdrive was fine in recipient (current issue) car before the gears crunched, and the overdrive worked in the donor car prior to the blown engine incident.

Suppose first check will be fluid level. Then see about fixing overdrive...
