Black fibers/hairs in my coolant?!?! 200 1988

Hi. I just did a full coolant flush today and replaced with Zerex G05.

I've noticed this in my coolant before. But after a complete flush with distilled water I'm noticing this substance in my coolant expansion tank still. Curious to what it may be. It appears like tiny pieces of fiber. Maybe my head gasket deteriorating?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

    Hi,

It could be engine exhaust. Have you ever topped up the coolant in the past?

I did have an occasion once when it sat for two weeks. When I got back the expansion tank was empty. Refilled it to the max line. It dribbled out between the cylinder head and block below #1 spark plug and water pump. It never leaks when the expansion tank level gets exactly in the middle of max and min or less than the middle. I do notice water droplets being spit from the exhaust.

You mentioned that when you filled the expansion tank the coolant dribbled out between the head & block around cylinder 1 & water drops were coming from the exhaust.. Sounds to me like your head gasket is going or gone.. Have you checked your engine oil to see if it is milky-caramel looking?

Yeah it didn't actually dribble out of the block when I poured coolant in the expansion. I saw a build up of green crust in that spot. Never saw a wet spot in that spot. Sometimes I can smell burning coolant while driving. When seeing the low coolant I put the two together.

I know the coolant stop leak I used had a grit-like consistency to it. This has a fiber-ish look to it. And I remember seeing it before I used the coolant stop-leak.

No oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil. Just coolant under the exhaust manifold which only leaks when the the reservoir is above the middle between Max and Min in the expansion tank. At that mid point it doesn't leak except the time I let it sit in triple digit weather for two weeks.

I know it needs a head gasket and I'm gonna get a reman head come winter time when I have the $ and the time to do it. Unless that is I find oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. That's when I start selling my Star Wars memorabilia.

The exhaust-in-the-coolant thing has got me a little worried thou. No air bubbles in the expansion so far...

Hope you don't have to sell your Star Wars memorabilia... May the Force be with you!

As Jorrell noted, your cooling system is spitting out old stop leak. The fibers are supposed to plug the leaks. I suspect you have a head gasket job in the very near future.

The water drops you see coming out of the exhaust are probably just condensation, unless you do have a head gasket issue.

could someone in past have put a block sealant into engine? it has black fibers in it's makeup.

          Thanks Gary.
I'm not sure if block sealant has been used. PO may have used it. Is that added to the oil or coolant?
I used coolant stop leak two years ago. $40 napa stuff. They told me buildup in the coolant passages would be minimal. After reading up on why I shouldn't use it I never used it again. Planned on getting a reman head this spring. But it'll have to wait til this winter.

The coolant stop-leak didn't appear to have these fine fibers in it.

You used a stop leak additive in the cooling system, that is your answer. The only other time I have seen this was on a Jeep inline six, they do such a crappy job flushing the block after it is cast that black sand is left behind.
