Got the power locks working -- except that the driver's door lock button won't go down unless I push the latch mechanism, on the edge of the door, into such a position that the door won't even shut. Same thing when I try to lock it with the key.

This sound familiar to anybody? I can't make any sense of the diagrams in the book, or the way all those parts move around when I play with them.

With the driver door open you can only lock the other 3 doors with the knob.Drivers stays open.You can olny lock the drivers drom the outside with the key,or if you open a rear door close the driver door and reach in from the back and push the driver knob down.Now all the doors lock.Just keep the keys in your HAND!

Does it lock if you close the door and push the button down through the open window or through the open the back door? Or if you use the key? If that is the case then it may be a security feature that I noticed with an '89 - so you can't accidentally lock yourself out.

My '80 allows you to push the knob down and close the door, thus locking yourself out, even unintentionally.

There may be a part in the locking mechanism that can be removed to allow knob push-down while the door is open.

Well, holy crapolie! I shoulda thought of that! Problem solved. I'm so used to my '83 that I've had for 15 years, and the PO did all kinds of strange things to this car; I just assumed that was one of them...

Be aware of the plastic doughnut that surrounds the lock cylinder. If it has come loose the metal tab will not connect to the white plastic prong. When this happens, you can't engage the CL with the key. My car suffered from this twice until I made a permanent fix involving zip ties.

The interior trim panel can be removed. Then you will be able to see how the linkages work. Also check the wires' condition where they go into the door from the"A" pillar, they can get frayed and weak.
