glove box removal...how to? It seems to have some sort of rivets holding it 900

The latch is broken so I hope to find one in the junkyard but I do not see how to remove this one. Not looking like the 240 setup. Thanks , Kris

    Dear kriscarlson,

Hope you're well. When you use the term "latch" do you refer to the locking lug, the piece that comes up from the lock body, i.e., a part that goes up and down, when you turn the key in the lock cylinder? Or, do you refer to the item affixed to the top of the glove box housing, which has a downward-pointing bump, behind which catches the lock's lug?

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I now see how it comes out. I have been without a computer for some time so I didn't respond earlier. Thank you Spook and Brickster. Kris

Hello, you can part the entire assembly. It also responds well to repair. The sleeve that is the glove box has screws on the outer inside of the glove box. When removed, the sleeve comes out. The entire frame, including the door cover can be removed by removing the screws that are visible after the sleeve comes out. This frame, I think, includes the clasp catcher. I have rebuilt the door on mine down to the screws after mine broke off. I replaced the lock individually, inner door liner, and repaired the frame when it got broken while replacing the evaporator. Not sure this helps, but go slowly and get the liner out first.

    Dear Kris,

Hope you're well. Do you want to remove the entire glovebox? If not, what specific part do you want to remove? I don't want to burden you with a long set of instructions, for a job you don't need to do.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Spook, Actually I just need a latch or the part that is stationary...that broke from someone slamming it ...but it also seems to be riveted in place...so if there is a way to remove that please let me know. Thanks, Kris

        Dear kriscarlson,

Hope you're well. The part, on which the glove box lock bar engages, is called - in Volvospeak - the "striker plate". This is part #6840203. It should cost about $6-7, at a dealer. It is held in place by pop rivets, most likely 1/8" diameter.

You'll have to remove the glove box. There are two screws at either side of the glove box door opening, under small square covers, that must be gently pried-up. These covers are coated with a fuzzy gray material.

In addition, there are two or three hex nuts, which are accessed from the passenger foot-well. Below the glove box door, there is a plastic "plate" that runs the full width of the footwell, and curves towards the front of the car. The hex nuts , that secure this plate, are at its edge. I believe the hex nuts are 10mm.

I'd first remove the hex nuts (two or three) and then remove the front screws, taking care to support the glove box assembly. I don't recall whether the rivets for the striker plate are immediately accessible. I once had to swap-out a glove box lock, but didn't need to pay attention to the striker plate.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
