Replaced o2 sensors NOW I get P0131 and P0172 S90-V90

This year seems to be the year for my car to give me a fit. A few weeks ago I started having the car cut off. I fixed that issue (MAF) but while diagnosing it I noticed my Auterraweb software reported a problem with Bank 1 Sensor 2 Oxygen sensor.

So I ordered a new one for the REAR and installed it. Still it reported that B1S2 O2 had an error. When I looked at what it was reading there was no data. (See attached picture)

So next I replaced the FRONT O2 sensor. Still it reports nothing on B1S2 but now to add to the fun the car has started turning the CEL on and reporting codes P0131 and P0172. If I reset them they come right back. If I disconnect the battery they come back the first time I rev the engine, or after a while idling.

In diagnosing my earlier problem of stalling, I replaced the MAF & Airbox Thermostat, almost all rubber elbows, tees, etc. New Air Filter, cleaned throttle body and Idle control valve.

Does anyone know if Auterraweb can read the B1 S2 Oxygen sensor? What could be wrong?

what brand of sensor? oe connector? seen lotsa problems with non-oe sensors on the 4 sensor cars, s80s especially, pop o2 codes with new, non-oe sensors. without looking at the car, it could also be that cat is dead. any sensor will pop a code for a dead cat, just doing it's job. good luck, chuck.

After doing some reading I see that some scanners/software have trouble reading Sensor 2 because the voltage is so low, that generic readings are not good enough. I am not sure if this is the case for Auterraweb, but it makes sense.

The sensor is a Bosch. The bad part is the old sensor #1 did not generate an error. This is only since I put the new one in.

is it a bosch with connector or a universal 1? had problems with sensors that do not plug in. a new code with a new sensor CAN happen w/the wrong sensor. also, some of the oe style bosch sensors for volvos were WIRED wrong at the connector. post part numbers, old sensors and new, and maybe we'll get to the bottom of this.

as far as the software, can't help you. i use a scope for voltage and a generic obd2 tool for codes and some data. good luck, chuck.

This is the one I got:

          http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/14895/nm/1997_1998_Volvo_V90_Direct_Fit_Oxygen_Sensor_Front/category_id/169

Connector and all. I monitored the output from it last night. I did see it drop to 0.0 occasionally. I am not sure if this is normal or what. Plan on graphing/recording it tonight, with fuel consumption, and air flow and see what I get.

I feel pretty confident the reason I get no data on sensor 2 is the software is reading generic info. The older palm version had a Volvo database. I upgraded to the Windows version, which has a lot more features.

i also asked for the old sensor numbers. could be different. lemme know, chuck.

Unfortunately I threw the old front one away. I meant to keep it but my kids threw it in the kitchen garbage.

If I still had it I would put it back in and see if the error goes away, at least then I'd know if it were the sensor or not.

On the rear, which I replaced a month ago I purchased a Walker Oxygen Sensor - Rear Part Number: W0133-1894645

Everything was fine after I replaced the rear one, my problem began once I replaced the front one.

well, the walker number from the sensor itself, not someone's number on the invoice, might help. i know bosch has 10 digit numbers on those units, that's what i was looking for. but, the fact you installed a walker and not a bosch may be the whole problem. non-oe sensors have been a problem on volvos since the rear sensor cars came out in 96. good luck, chuck.

I'm going to climb under the car tomorrow and see if I can get the numbers off of them. However I made an appointment with the dealer to check it out on Monday.

Last night I decided to make sure all the intake system looked fine. I checked inside the airbox, removed the idle control valve/elbow, checked the flame trap, air pump, and the throttle-body. Never touched the o2 sensors or their wires. Everything looked great.

This morning I start the car up and drive off... the CEL goes off, the car idles and drives fine. Plan on pulling the air pump out and checking it for water tomorrow as well.

so cancel the appt, unless there's other issues, and cross your fingers. could've been something the ecu had to relearn. i don't know that motronic like i do lh 2.4, but i know there's adaptation involved. good luck, chuck.

Looks like it was a vacuum leak on the intake system. Not sure where exactly but I removed the airbox top checked the damper, removed the elbow with the idle control valve attached, checked the butterfly and then put them back together on Friday and Saturday the system ran like new. No longer throwing error codes, cel is off, idles beautifully. Life is good.

                      Thanks for the help.

if you had said p0131, then i'd believe a vacuum leak. never seen a vacuum leak cause both the codes you posted. good catch, chuck.
