M40/41 Buildup 120-130

I have taken apart three transmissions. Two had bad laygears. The roller bearing surfaces were galled, but the gears looked nice. Although I wont need to do it, I was wondering if it is possible to recondition the bearing surface by enlarging it and hardening? Another possibility would be a hardened sleeve of some sort?

I've got an m41 and two m40's apart. Since I don't have a decent d-type overdrive and the m40 in my car is on it's last legs (I can grab the pinion and jiggle the output shaft about 3/16 of an inch.) I'm building up an m40.

My m41 has the best reverse idler gear, but I don't want to mess it up trying to pull it out to swap into an m40 without the correct tool. I'm thinking about putting the M40 guts into the m41 case. Isnt the only difference between an m41 and an m40 case the height of the filler plug? I don't see how having a higher oil level in a 4 speed could hurt anything.

You should check the bolt pattern on the rear of the case. They MAY be different.
Of course the output shaft is much different also.

Aren't the sleeves you are referring to are only made to make up for the groove that is sometimes worn in at a seal interface?
I don't think "speedi-sleeves" are hardened and thus would not be appropriate for the layshaft.

My pinion could use one of these sleeves. There is a nice groove worn in at the oil seal.
