90 245 - someone I know crossed cables while jumping battery-smoke in dash 200

Crossed wires while jumping car. Car was jumped once a half hour earlier and would start and drive fine. Most likely dirty contacts. The second jump the wires where crossed and a little bit of smoke was seen by the owner through the missing stereo upper space. Now car wont start or attempt to start (no crank). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,

Short circuiting two batteries can destroy both of them.

    What is the battery voltage?

    Check the chassis ground.

Buy your friend a 12 pack.

For starters, check the fuses in front of the driver side door, then replace the blown fuses. Sorry, I can't recall if the various ECU, ICU modules had reverse voltage protection diodes.

Well changing the 25 amp fuse worked to get the car started. Looks like the alt brushes where worn down to almost non existence but even after a donor car swap of the volt regulator the car won't run for more than a couple blocks after being jumped. Battery needs to be swapped out.

Not sure what the smoke was but hopefully the brain boxes survived unharmed.

Sounds like you got lucky on that one....I figure if it's running you have not burnt anything vital, smoke was hopefully dust on the fuse or something as it popped. Otherwise you will find a broken fan or something (wiper) something unprotected later. I used to have a "friend" like that. Still have him, he just shows up less as the years go by and the experience grows. No worries though, I figure as I get ancient he'll start showing up more often and keep me company in my twilight years.
