Tranny leak at speedo cable 120-130 1967

Is this a simple fix??? I 'think' I am leaking gear fluid when going over 60mph and the oil appears to be coming from the top of the tranny.

I do not have the equipment to pull the tranny, so don't tell me I need to do that!! I do have an overdrive/M41.

On the same thread, the rubber boot at the clutch fork is just about gone. I believe that all I need to do there is to uncouple the fork and slide on the new boot cover. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Thanks,

Klaus

Be very careful about the brand of seal you use. I have recently had a very bad experience with gearbox seals (front, rear, and speedo drive) marked “DPH GERMANY” obtained as part of a kit from a US supplier. They were all leaking virtually from the outset. The rubber parts seem not to be compatible with the gearbox oil, as the oil that leaks past them had a streaky black tint in it. I subsequently replaced the rear seal with one obtained from CVI in Sweden (Volvo brand) and that was perfect. I have ordered new front and speedo drive seals as well. While waiting for them to arrive I put the original 40-year old speedo drive seal back (it is not damaged when you remove it). That turned out to be much better at keeping the oil in than the brand new DPH one.

I don’t know about the M41, but on the M40 it is dead easy to replace the speedo drive seal. No need to "pull the tranny".

Could also be that the large cap/nut retaining the shift lever in the top cover is loose. Pull the mat and shift lever boot.

Is it the speedo cable or the top of the tranny?
They are quite a ways apart!
You might be able to put in a tranny lid gasket by just lowering the tranny without
removing it. You'd have to disconnect the driveshaft and the rear mount and it will
lower until the pan is sitting on the crossmember.
Watch out for the brake light switch and heater hoses at the back of the engine,
also the radiator hoses and fan at the front. You might have to drain the radiator
and unhook the hoses also.
BTW this becomes troublesome if your front engine mounts are broken.
