Does anyone have information on converting my front wheel drum brakes to disc. I already have the disc hubs. Does it matter it they are from the 122 or p1800?
What problems will I have? Thanks, Tim

I do not know if the caliper is the same, but the pistons are the same as a XKE E_TYPE JAG. This link my be of some use to you in your quest.
I would to buy these (in s/s follow link ) for this price, but by the time I have paid all the
duty it is cheaper to get them over here (UK)in chrome/steel.
Nobody makes them in stainless over here.

PV conversion to Amazon discs is pretty easy but only "cheap" if you're lucky enough to have found good disc/hub assemblies and good calipers at a reasonable price. A conversion using modern, reasonably priced calipers and discs would be welcomed by Amazon owners as long as it's technically sound from the start and in the long term. The usual problem with changing discs i.e. knocking the old ones off and pressing new ones on is accuracy. They are usually ground after shrinking on to the refurbed hubs to ensure that run out is within limits. It's +/- very little. ABS was fitted to very few 240's, certainly in the UK and Europe, so I don't think they will be an off the shelf item over here. Maybe 700/900 calipers are usable? Do ABS calipers usually only have one input?

The price from the link at £153 is very expensive, the same set of pistons from
mervspares in Kent is about £80 +p&p

Actually MEV Spares in E Sussex, but good call. You did say there were no UK sources and I already had that one in my Favourites. There is a Jag specialist in New York who does them but he's about the same price as Kitek.
I'd really like to see the Girling numbers for both the Volvo and Jag pistons to compare before buying, if I was buying.
Interesting that MEV's don't list a caliper seal kit for the 3 piston Jag caliper or the 3 piston Volvo caliper. You might also think they'd list the SS pisons on the Volvo page if they were correct.

Thanks, we're obviously singing from the same hymn sheet.
Have you gone down this route and bought from MEV?

Derek, not yet but imminent, I really would like the S/S from the USA but P&P & Import Duty make a mess of the price.

Hi Tim,
The problem I found with using the 1800 or 122 for the conversion is finding rotors and calipers.
I am using 122 hubs and 2004 Land Rover Freelander rotors. The centers have to be machined so they will slip over the hub. The lug pattern is the same but the lug holes have to be machined bigger to fit the larger lug bolts.
I also am using a 1993 Volvo ABS caliper because it has just one hydraulic fitting and not two fittings.
Also needs a caliper mounting bracket made up but it is a nice fit.
Rotors were $28.00 each and $30.00 each for machine work.
Calipers were $75.00 each.
Mounting brackets ? as I will have some made up to sell.
You can see the setup here http://s1153.photobucket.com/albums/p513/rayj5/
Disregard the Morris Minor pictures. It is my other project.

Ray....did you ever get brackets made up for this? And is anyone willing to modify some shock bolts via welding for those of us without the talent/local shops to do these sort of things.
The drum brakes on this thing don't inspire the most confidence, and this is definitely something I'd like to do to the 444 in the near future.

I just finished the 122 caliper mount for the driver side bracket Tuesday and will be working on the passenger side today.
I have the 122 caliper mounts made up in steel and these new ones I am making out of aluminum to keep the weight down.
I will post new pictures to photobucket this evening.
I will be making the 544 mounts up so they can be mounted at the front so the shock can remain in the stock location and no mods will be needed.

So, these 544 brackets you're working on will allow use of 93 240 calipers or 122 calipers? Either way, if you can do this without modifying the shock mounting bolt, that's awesome!
If you plan on making up more of these for sale, you have a DEFINITE customer already!!

I am working on 122S caliper brackets right now. These same brackets will be used for the 544 with mounting holes drilled for the 544.
It uses the 1988 to 1993 Volvo 240 series ABS calipers. ABS calipers use one brake hose connection where the standard 240 series caliper uses a connecting line to a "T" connector to the brake hose. These calipers are readily available.
The rotors are from a 2004 Land Rover Defender. They have the proper lug pattern but the lug holes need to be drilled larger to fit the Volvo lug bolts.
Just press the studs out of the old 122 rotors and hubs and press the studs back in the Land Rover rotors and 122 hubs.
I recommend using braided brake hoses.

This sounds very interesting. If I read you correctly this conversion could be used the other way and fit back onto the Amazon? If so, could you provide some useful pictures please. The stumbling block with alternate rotors is the accuracy needed for the press fit. Do the Defender ones fit that way or loose but located by the studs and a pair of set crews. Comments please!

Yes. The first design of the caliper mounts uses the 122 spindle. I bought a pair of 122 spindles complete with calipers, rotors, bearings, etc to use on my 544 disc brake conversion. Trying to find 122 rotors and calipers yielded prices of around $600.00 for rotors and around $400 for calipers.
I have a database of over 8,000 rotors so research began. The Defender rotors have the closest dimentions that nearly match the 122 rotors. 240 calipers are widely available and basically the same size as the 122 calipers.
The defender rotors have the same lug spacing as the 122 and 544. The lug bolts are smaller on the defender so I had a machine shop bore or drill out the lug holes so the 122 or 544 lugs are a press fit.
I made the first adapters out of steel and posted pictures to my photobucket page.
I am working on making the next set out of aluminum. I have the passenger side made up and the driver side made up and then ruined it by cutting off too much material. I will whip another driver side out today and post to photobucket tonight.

derek uk, I have disc's on the front of my pv544, they where fitted in Sweden, they are a 3 pot caliper, the pistons are easier to get hold off than the 140 four pot.

What calipers are used with these? Can the company supply the angled shock bolts too?
|
|

Hello,
These front brake caliper adapter brackets were designed for the 3 piston 122/1800 calipers and rotors.
And the best part is the shock does not have to be moved and hence no mods are needed for the shock mounting stud.

What is the cost on these...and how does one get involved in a "group buy" for these bracket? If they require no modification to the shock bolt, I'd be really interested!!

Hello,
We are doing our 1st transaction with this supplier, so I am not sure if we will get any discount.
The conversion bracket set is listed on their website at 279 euros which is around $370.00, but the ad also claims that VAT of 21% is already included in the price.
And since we are not in the EU we do not pay VAT, so the price should be around $290.00 plus shipping from Denmark.
So unless they are willing to give us a break on 2 or more sets, the only real savings might be in shipping 2 sets at the same time as opposed to shipping them separately.

Left out that the calipers are from a 1993 240 Volvo with ABS.

I should have been paying closer attention to this. I just recently put $300 worth of new front 122 calipers on my 544, the originally swapped on junkyard calipers were finally dead (cracked boots, then eventually sticky pistons).
After a long fruitless search for more reasonably priced calipers, I finally had to bite the bullet and buy some high priced calipers from Europe.
But I actually have a pair of fine working '93 240 ABS calipers sitting around the garage - left over from the brake upgrade I did on my hot rod Classic wagon. I'd vaguely pondered doing something with those, because I have the 240 vented rotors as well (the 240 got larger 960 rotors and some nice alu 4 piston Mazda Turbo RX-7
calipers), but figured the bolt pattern difference (4.25 vs. 4.5) would make it more effort than it was worth.
I didn't need new rotors though, perhaps when I need to swap those out I'll remember this. Doubling down on the $300 calipers with $400 worth of rotors just to have funky old 3 piston unvented front discs doesn't seem like a good idea.

Amen John,
With around $180.00 in rotors including the machine work, $200.00 in calipers (no cores to trade in)and around (secret, might sell some of the mounts later after the hydraulics is worked out)should be a longer lasting option than 122 or 1800 option. Have not tried to mount the dust shields and probably won't try.

Hello ........The previous submitted info has been excellent, I have recently acquired the front Rotors, etc. from a '68 122S an in the process of mounting the components.
Question: With respect to the Caliper mount plate .... I understand that only the one bolt hole (@ the 10 O'clock position) may be used. Previous directions then indicate that you may then proceed to drill the other "three holes.
On my backing plate .... I only have "two" holes that would have a portion of metal belonging to the original spindle to drill out !!!
Is the plan then to perhaps weld additional metal onto the original
mounting plate and drill it ???
Thks.
