Real quick clutch alignment tool question.. 140-160

Hey guys...
I know I could research this, but I'm way shy of time.

Doing a R&R transmission job with a friend. M46 in a '84 240. Wanting to do the clutch too, as it was abused in the 240's final limp to the shop (4th gear only)

I have an input shaft from a M41. Would that input shaft work as a clutch alignment tool in the M46? (length to pilot, clutch splines compatible)

I expect if the clutch is the same type, it'd work. But I don't know if it is.

Thanks, and sorry for my lack of research.

Off to errands now.

? 140-160

Hello,

In 1979 Volvo changed the spline count on the input shaft of the M45/M46 and therefore a M41 input shaft will NOT work unless someone has substituted an early M45/46 transmission.

I know that Oreillys and Autozone have loaner tools and I am pretty sure they have a universal clutch alignment tool that will work.

OK...

Thanks again. I guess the really stupid bit on my part...

I've got the shaft, I've got the tranny...

I can measure, I can count :)

Thanks again, happy weekend!

Hello,

The 2 clutch kits are almost identical.

The only difference is the number of splines in the hub of the clutch disc.

Do yourself a favor and only buy a new clutch kit.

In fact, some clutch kits come with an alignment tool.

We learned early that some re-builders are not always aware of the differences between the F&S clutch components and the B&B clutch components.

On more than 1 occasion, we have received mismatched or mislabeled clutch components from re-builders.

Maybe I misunderstood Matt's ''clutch splines compatible'' ? (NMI) 140-160
