Check Engine Light S90-V90 1998

Hello,

My check engine light came on and I took it to a mechanic who found out that it was the solenoid shifter relay. He replaced and the the code went away. I drove it for about a week so that all the monitors can reset so that I can get it smogged (I paid the registration fee already). The check engine light came on again and I took it back to the mechanic. He ran a test on his scanner and there were no codes at all. However the check engine light was still on.

Any ideas what is going on with this? I just need to pass smog so that I can get my sticker. Don't want to get pulled over. But with the check engine light on, I can't take it to smog test center.

Any input will be appreciated.

thanks

Here's what I would do: Disconnect the battery (after writing down your radio security code and station pre-sets) and leave it off 30 minutes or more.

Re-connect the battery. Input the radio security code and set one of your pre-sets. You might find that ll the pre-sets are OK.

The CE light should not come on. Once the computer sensors are re-set, it may come back, so get the smog test done ASAP.

Good Luck,

Bob

Many code readers do not read the Volvo TCM codes. Is the trans behaving normally? Do your reverse lights come on when in R?

Dewfpo,

Having similar problem; alternate gas cap eliminated the "Check Engine" light but now readiness does not set even after 1200 miles, 3 mos and going thru readiness procedure w/ good battery twice. Secondary fan is good & comes on. Snipped many vacuum line ends for better seal replacing short right angle dried out one near engine. Not set for six emission tests - so they run test. Notice one reverse light is out - what does this have to do w/ emissions? I know you're good from reading many of your past posts, HELP! Thanks, 1998 V90

Hi XKE,

In DaveHa's case if the transmission was not acting properly and the back up lights weren't working properly (as in, coming on when in Reverse and not in neutral or Drive), it could indicate a bad PNP sensor. In which case, the TCM would tell the ECM to set the MIL on the dash. If this were the case, having the MIL lit might cause a person to fail their state inspection (depending of course which state).

In your case, if only the one bulb is out but the transmission shifts fine and the reverse lights indeed come on when the transmission is truly in reverse, you likely only need a bulb and the TCM is not setting a code.

I hope all my jiberish makes sense.
