Lessons learned on replacing exhaust flange gasket 900

I just finished installing a new exhaust flange gasket on my daughter's 940. What should have been a simple job turned out to be a bitch!
Heating the nuts with a torch and soaking with PBlaster helped, but wasn't enough. Got out my trusty impact wrench and rounded off the points of the nut. Tried to cut it with a Dremel but couldn't get a good angle. When a local muffler shop quoted $125-200 to do the job I rethought my options....slashing my wrists was one of them!
After a few beers and some google searches, I decided to buy an Irwin Bolt Grip set. It's a God-send. Can't believe I didn't have one already. It's truly a must have set of sockets for anyone's tool set.
I also used the trick of heating the nut and bleeding beeswax into the threads. Works great. After an hour, I heated the nut again, tapped on the 13mm bolt grip and voila! The bolts came off like a dream. One of them was totally destroyed but I was still able to get it off. Now the car
is quiet and I've got $125 to spend on beer. Life is good.

Use stainless steel bolts.

Any wax will do - like birthday cake candles from the grocery store (NMI) 900

beeswax 900

I grabbed on of my wife's expensive decorator candles and scraped some off the bottom. And, no, I wouldn't slash my wrists for $200. If I wanted a transportation appliance with no challenges and no soul I'd just buy a Toyota Camry :) and I'd drink some sort of no fat, no salt, no flavor, no buzz, no calories beer....

I got some beeswax at Joanne Fabrics. I think it somehow it used to strengthen thread.

Heating the bolt and letting it suck into the threads (like soldering copper) loosens/lubricates the bolt making it easier to remove

Dear mtbiker,

Hope you're well. Beeswax is made by bees. Busy bees.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Hey, sharing is caring; that beer sounds good... :-)

I have not heard of the beeswax trick. I have heard of the welder trick though, which I would have posted had you asked. Of course, then I'd feel more deserving of that beer...
Will look into the Irwin thing too.

I just zapped them off with a grinder. Job done in under 5 minutes. Didn't even bother trying a wench.

Dear vacuumhead,

Hope you're well. I agree, 100%!!! Angle-grinder does the job. Replace with stainless bolts and nuts. Coat threads with high-temp (2,500 degree) anti-seize.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
