Speedometer bouncing 200 1993

My question is, my 1993 240 speed needle is moving back down when I apply my brakes and when I let off the pedal it jumps back up to the right speed. Sometimes it stays on zero until I hit a bump. Sometimes it stays at the right speed then wiggles up and down about 10 miles. Do you know what the problem could be?

Thank you

Ken~

Might want to check the hall sensor on the rear axle for frayed wiring. This is pretty common on our bricks.

Sorry if I was a little vague, this is all done from inside the car. The turn signal and window washer levers mount to the steering column, kinda down below the instrument cluster. There are ground wires on the mounting screws, one on each side.

Remove the steering column top cover, there are 2 screws on the top, then the bottom cover, there are 2 screws going forward into the dash.

If you go to the top of this page, right hand corner, see the red station wagon? Type "washfit" into the box and hit search, scroll down to the file marked "240 steering column" (on page 2), that will take you to the pic. Also see "windshield washer affects speedometer" and say thank you to Jorrell, as all my info originally came from him! (-:

Good luck!

Hi,
Just had this problem recently. There is a terminal that has it's ground point at the left of the steering column, positioned near your turn signal.

You will need to first unhook your negative battery cable for at least 15 min. Then remove the knee bolster, upper and lower plastic halves on the steering column.

It could also be possible that there is a loose ground at the lower left of the control console (the one with heater and AC controls).

I had a similar problem with my '87 240 wagon, see windshield washer affects speedometer it turned out to be loose ground wires on the steering column. I posted a (way too big!) pic titled - 240 steering column ... hope this helps.

Hey

I could not locate your pic. You believe that a speedometer ground wire is loose on the steering column? So I need to look on the steering column for loose wires to the speedometer. The rack and pinion has been replaced long time ago. Maybe look up under that way?

Ken~
