sticking caliper 700

Hi all, i have a 1990 740 na and when the brakes get hot and i sit stationary with my foot on the brakes , the rhs front jams on and when i next reapply the brakes i feel a clunk on this side which i assume is the hub assembly moving because the brakes are stuck on. My diagnosis is that the pistons are sticking in the caliper. I should add that i have just purchased the car which i dont believe was driven much lately. Do you concurr or am i missing something? Thanks for your opinions. David

Rhys, i put the pads in over three weeks ago and am having trouble remembering, but if i am correct, the first piston rhs was hard to get moving and i remember thinking that the lhs caliper pistons moved much easier. Pistons, pins, hose, what else can go wrong? I first thought ABS (not having much experience with this), but didnt think this was logical. David

The flexible rubber brake lines can decompose from the inside out, one of the common effects of this is that the rubber hose begins to act like a check valve allowing fluid to easily flow through with foot pressure but not so easily release, one way to test the flex hose is to briefly open a bleeder screw while the caliper is in the frozen position and if the piston immediately relaxes then you will know that the blocked hose was the culprit.

Thanks for your input, my first guess was the guide pins so i put new pads in and lubricated the guide pins with special grease for this purpose. There were no funny wear marks of any kind on the pins. Drove off with confidence and dang! the same issue which lead me to think of the caliper pistons. Do you think new guide pins might be the answer. David

When you pushed the pistons back in order to install the new pads, did they move smoothly and easily? That's the first clue. If any were tighter that may be the problem. If you lubed the pins well I doubt they are an issue now.

Yes...this is usually caused by the floating caliper guide pins freezing. They are usually very difficult to get out once they get locked up. I had to jerry-rig a press using a long bolt and a deep socket.

Impossible to concur w/o physical inspection,it could possibly be a seized guide pin for the floating caliper, combine that with worn pads and the piston could be at such an angle that it would get jammed up. Clunking could be coming from a number of places. Time to go poking around.
    Good luck with new acquisition.
