Removing Charcoal Canister? 200 1981

So my 81 volvo 245 has been having the slightest take-off stumble as well as surging when cruising at a constant speed. So in my quest to eliminate all possible vacuum leaks I ask you this:

Is it possible that if I plug all applicable vacuum/evap lines, will it harm my lil ol B21F? I remember yanking the one out of my '79 Camaro with no ill effects, of course a camaro and a volvo are quite different beasts

Thanks Much

Shaun

    Removing Charcoal Canister? 200 1981

During engine operation air flows from the atmosphere through the canister into the engine. This is how the fumes collected from the fuel tank are flushed from the charcoal. The engine mixture is designed to have this extra air coming into the intake. Eliminating it may cause the engine to run rich. However, the O2 sensor feedback system may be able to compensate by changing the control pressure to the fuel distributor. Either way when the engine is off fumes from the gas tank would vent through the canister to the atmosphere when the charcoal can no longer absorb them.
