The (a?) source of my oil leak 85 245 200 1985

I thought I was going to replace the plug in the back of my engine (the cam plug?). So I bought the plug and today I bought the cam shaft cover gasket.

I took off the cover just now, and noticed a few things.

1. It came off really easy. Should it?

2. There was oily spots on the bottom of the gasket (towards the engine). They were located almost exactly where I've always had oil leaks but could not necessarily tell.

3. the gasket appeared to be stiff AND deformed, including one of the areas where the oil leak is.

I really hope this is the issue, and i don't have to replace the plug (which seems to be more work than I want to do...especially if it might not have been an issue).

The oily locations are as follows. The #4 (?) plug/back of the engine (passenger side) and the opposite side for #1. the front I always assumed it was due to the flame trap/breather box on the front and the plug for the rear.

Hopefully when I get it back together, the leak ends OR at least moves somewhere less annoying.

I assume by cover that you mean valve cover with the big type VOLVO across it. It is incredibly common that the valve cover gasket leaks as the gasket shrinks, deforms, and the nuts seem to loosen up on their own. When you install the new gasket, go heavy with the sealer where the gasket goes over the cam. If the rear cam plug had blown out, you would be losing about a quart a minute of oil.

How "tight" were the valve cover nuts when you removed them? A valve cover gasket leak can also indicate a plugged up flame trap that creates excess pressure in the crankcase, make certain it is clear.

Yeah, I meant that. I guess it depends on who you ask, as to what it's called. Plus, I couldn't remember what it was called. ;)

      As for your questions:

They weren't terribly hard to remove the nuts. The flame trap has been cleaned regularly since I've owned it (almost 4 years now). When I first got the car, the FT (and a lot of other things) was clogged.

I have the bracket IPD sells for the rear cam plug, and it's been on the car for a while now. I also have a new FT filter in it (recently), and a new breather box (recently) too. Also, new rear main seal, and all three front seals (cam, lay shaft and front crank seal), new oil pan gasket, oil cap filler gasket and o-ring for breather box.

If you get your fingers back there at the Cam Plug, is the back of the Head all oily??
With oil on the flat of the Valve Cover Gasket, there's a good chance oil is getting under there.

With the Valve cover off already, why not pull the two addition bolts (I think they are nuts) and replace the Puck anyway?

Based on your response, goop up the gasket around the cam humps with silicone and reinstall the valve cover. Torque the 10mm acorn nuts to spec, and you should be good to go. Recheck for oil seeps after a week of driving, if there is any, snug the closest acorn nut just a bit more, we're talking fractional rotations here.
