Generator to Alternator Conversion 120-130 1965

I've been combing the site for days now and have not been able to gather enough information to come to a definite conclusion for my specific application. So here's what I've got:

First off, I acquired a brand new 80 Amp Delco Remy alternator w/ internal regulator for '64-'86 Chevys, that gives either option for single or 3 wire hookup. I am determined to use it since I've got it. The price was too good to pass up and opting for a Bosch is not even a consideration.

I have a B20B in my '65 122 and it has the ear on the block to mount an alternator.

Question is: What do I have to do to allow the alternator to mount up to the block's existing ear, and what wire(s) need hooked up on a simple connection? I would like to avoid amp idiot light issues at the same time too.

Thanks in advance!

You want to order the Swem Kit alternator bracket:

    http://www.sw-em.com/altkit.htm

I just received my kit from Ron. It's a well designed, heavy duty
bracket with a wire harness for the amp light and very detailed instructions.
I have a later B18, also with the "ear" on the block, but Ron's bracket takes into account the smaller bolt size used on your Delco alternator.

    Hope this helps,

    Ron

After much heem-hawing, I finally broke down and spent the dough on the SwEm Kit. Thank you all for your suggestions! =)

Thank you for the suggestion, however is this my only option at this point? I'm trying to save money but also have a stable and reliable setup...

        Jared;

You stated that you already have a DR alt, so the decision has been made...short of designing and constructing your own mount, the most effective solution (certainly reliable and stable, with thousands of roadmiles behind it) would be the SwEm Kit.

See: http://www.sw-em.com/altkit.htm ...but don't take it from me, the guy selling it...ask around!

        Cheers

PS. Tnx for the referral VG72!

Thanks Cameron for the advice. Always nice to have a helpful local. And Ron, I emailed ya earlier today before I got back on the board just now regarding the kit. Please respond? Thanks! :)

Most auto electric shops will have an adjustable mounting bracket that will work pretty easily... I've used these a couple times with good results. ABE on SE Hawthorne (around 14th I think) had them last time I was in - maybe that's the way to go?

You can also drill out the ear on the block (but once that's done, it's forever) but the alt pulley may or may not line up with the crank and water pump pulleys. I wouldn't drill it.

        Best,

        Cameron

I just reamed out the alt hole, found the right bolt to go into the "ear" and fabbed a tension bracket using 2 alt tension brackets bolted together. The wiring is simple, get rid of the V reg, hook the big fat red to the main "+" post on the alt and I think the amp wire (small red?) I wired to a small spade connect on thaealt.. I had to use a couple of washers to line up the alt pulley with the engine pulley....all this sounds very mcgyver but it worked so well I never improved it. Was inexpensive and worked.
