Voltage Regulator? 140-160

Hi Everyone,
It seems my voltage regulator is going. It seems to work intermintently but more not. I had thought that on the 140's they were internal to the alternator, (so I replaced that), but still it reads a bad regulator. Sooo, I get out my green book and see that it is supposed to have one on the inner fender behind the headlight. Ah, is that the box on the left side behind the headlight? Mine looks aftermarket, (maybe replaced by the previous owner?)
Does anyone have one? ...that works?
I have a volt guage hooked up and is been reading "0" most of the time, but everynow and then it jumps up to a good reading.
I usually drive my 140 on some nice days during the winter, but Yeay for Spring and nicer weather.
Thanks,
CU

I figured out a franken alternator setup that works great.
I used the motorola front housing, stuck GM 10si guts and rear housing in, and got an aftermarket curved bracket from autozone (had to do a little gringing and drilling), and mounted it on very happily and now have 87amps.

Your voltmeter reading of zero is bogus.
What makes you think you have a regulator problem? Is your battery going down?
If not, you should check the wiring to your voltmeter.
You should use another voltmeter and check the voltage of the system, especially
when the engine is NOT running, while cranking, right after you have started it, and after it
    has run for a while.
Should be 12.6 volts when not running, slightly lower (more than 10 volts) while cranking,
right after you have started (should be about 14 volts) and after running for a while (probably slightly less, 13.5 volts)

what George said...To explain: your battery voltage cannot go from 12 to 0 (it can but only with a very defective battery). Your battery is part of the charging system your voltage meter reflects the entire system. Probably a loose connection, time to get dirty.

I don't recall the location of the voltage regulator on all the 140's but on my '69 it is located on the r/s fender well behind the headlight. There could be either a Motorola or Bosch alternator--they use different regulators.-- Dave

Thanks everyone for the input. I'll double check the voltmeter and wires.
What happened is that after driving for the first time in a couple of months, (battery was not dead, but run down so I charged it) I was getting no reading on the volt guage, which I assumed was a bad connection. However afterwards I could not start. A quick jump and it started right up. Now sometimes I get a good reading while driving and sometimes the guage just drops to zero. It does seem like a connection, I had checked, but I guess I will have to check agaion and a bit better this time.
I went to the local auto parts chain, they threw it on a tester and it reads "poor regulator"
The current Voltage regulator is a reman aftermarket one from the PO. I was thinking they could stick open/close/fry/diode issue???
      Thanks again,
      CU

check yours grounds, your battery connects and just the shape of all the wires. your symptoms are the kind that can be really hard to diagnose....but there will be an Ahah! moment and all will be well.
