Ball Joint / Tie Rod Separator Tool? 700

Can anyone recommend a decent all-purpose (screw-type) ball joint tie rod separator for the 700/900 series? Where to order from, part number, cost? Not the pickel-fork type -- I could not get that to work without fear of demolishing my front end.
I am half way through a front end upgrade with Moog ball joints / IPD bushings and if it weren't for the fact the I am removing the control arm completely (and having the ball joint removed by the folks replacing the bushings), not sure what I would be doing about getting the old ball joints out.

Thanks,

Rob

I did my ball joints and tierods and I couldn't reuse old sway bar bushings and Volvo cost $80 each so I got 95 chev s10 ones for $10 for bouth. If you need new ones I had to share.

"rent" the two puller sizes auto zone has and the pickle fork. One of the two sizes should work. If not, use the pickle fork and a small sledge hammer which will destroy the old ball joint in the process. You're replacing it so it's no big deal.

i have a tool i bought from jc whitney. i have only used it on tie rod ends but i would probably work fine for the ball joints. it is a screw-activated lever type. it's listed as the american presto tie rod end removal tool. worked great on tie rod ends.

    good luck, chris

    Hola Rob:
I got a kit with several different size screw-type removers from Harbor Frieght for about $50. It worked for my 86 740.

Have you tried your local parts store? Small deposit and get your money back when you return.

Agreed. I've used the loaner tools from Advance Auto. You pay for the kit when you "borrow " it. If you don't bring it back, you own it. If you do bring it back, they give you a full refund. It's a really nice service.

But there is a trick I learned years ago for removing tie rod ends and ball joints. This method was confirmed on this board by a professional Volvo tech... I can't remember his name. He said he hadn't used a tool to remove a ball joint or tie rod end on a Brick in years. Here's what you do: First, loosen the nut securing the taper joint. Take two good sized hammers (drilling hammers, ball peen hammers, etc. ... something with some real mass to them) and simply whack the taper joint as hard as you can on opposing sides simultaneously. The shock will make the ball joint/tie rod end pop right out.

Yes, much better idea, because now I have a set of tools that are taking up space in my little condo. Use the store's tool, return and use again if needed later. Use space saved to store your Cabernet Sauvignon!
