Hose from Radiator to Exp Tank vs. Regular Radiator Overflow Tubing 1988

My Volvo is 240DL 88. My water hose from Radiator to Expansion Tank needs to be replaced.

My Expansion Tank has a 0.7 bar (about 11 Psi) black cap. I am wondering if I can use 5/16 inch Radiator Overflow Tubing sold in any auto parts store.

Does anyone know that this tubing can be used under 11 Psi?

I found in BrickBoard.com that the original Volvo parts has the following specification: the air vent hose is 6.2mm in inner diameter, about 87.5cm (34.5 inches) long, and Volvo p/n 942700.

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Cooling.htm#ReplacingHoses

Under 11 psig pressure, is there any difference between both? Or I have to go with Volvo parts.

Thanks

I would consider using fuel hose instead.

The radiator overflow stuff doesn't have much internal reinforcement, it's just soft tubing. It will hold for a while, but I'm pretty sure 5 minutes after you start the car you'll be able to see it swollen up under pressure...then it's a time bomb for your coolant.

Fuel hose, radiator hose and other pressure hoses have reinforcement (threads or wires) which allow it to stay together under pressure. I think ordinary fuel line is 10-15psi rated but the EFI stuff is good for 60+ psi and will last as long as the car for only a couple bucks more.

Buy it by the foot from the bulk roll in back of your big local parts supply, rather than the short precut chunks that are way overpriced at the "discount" auto chains.

Hi BGreyWolf,

Thanks for your suggestion. But, the original hose does not look like to have any internal reinforcement.

I think the safety is very important to me. I do not want to take any risk to use the radiator overflow stuff .

Do you know if I can get 1/4"(about 6mm ID)fuel hose?
