Random Questions 200 1990

I am down to only a few things that I need for the 1990 240 DL sedan that I just acquired:

Accessory bushings for the power steering pump and alternator (since I have to remove one and the others are shot).

Left taillight (broken lenses).

FCP Groton carries both urethane and OE style bushings. Keeping in mind that I will be doing this outside in the cold, are the urethane bushings worth the trouble and expense?

Since I have yet to find an OE taillight on this site, Ebay or any of the standard vendors that is reasonably priced, is there anything I need to look out for? FCP Groton has an assembly for $88 but I have been reading the horror stories about after market units and wanted your opinion.

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/10960/nm/1985_1993_Volvo_240_Left_Tail_Light_Black_Trim

My local pick and pull had the outside manual mirror, inside mirror, and alternator adjuster I needed. Oddly, I thought I pulled a muscle removing it...sadly it ended up my first kidney stone which I am currently laid up with. All I have been able to accomplish today is to make power bleeder from a spare cap, garden sprayer and a barb-to-1/4" IP plastic fitting.

Thanks,

Mike

I got a pair of sedan tail lights on Ebay 14 months ago for $120. shipped to my door and have been very pleased. They were made in Estonia (an EU member country) and come with everything, new circuit board, bulbs, and gasket. Still look great.

Those were ones I was concerned about because I read a couple of very negative reviews. I have been out of the brick world for a while so I am a bit overly dependent on the recent posts.

Sounds like I should just roll my dice like the rest of you...

      Thanks,

      Mike

        Random Questions 200 1990

I have a bunch of NOS OEM Volvo repair lenses (sedan only). They're like the clear back-up lens repair kits, but for the corner lenses (amber turn signal and red running light) on both sides. I found them as part of a large lot of NOS Volvo parts.

They're great because rather than risking aftermarket lamps, or replacing the whole unit, you can just replace the lens with OEM. I have a limited supply but might be able to help you out - send me an email if you're interested: biaforce at gmail dot com

To use these you remove the cracked lens and make sure you chisel out all of the old lens. Then you just silicone the new lens in place - I recommend using Volvo's silicone for this purpose. I've used it on my 244 and the results are excellent. The repair lenses come with OEM instructions.

I thought volvo only made and sold the back up light lens.It is the only lens on the 6 panel tail light that actually comes off.The others are fused to the assembly.????

Well, these are NOS from a defunct dealer's inventory, so perhaps they did not sell them direct to the public as with the clear back up lenses. But I can tell you that these are Genuine OEM Volvo parts with part numbers - don't have them handy at the moment. Here's a photo:

            Photobucket

You are correct, these lenses are fused to the housing. The OEM Volvo instructions direct the installer to break out the remainder of the cracked lens and then chisel out the fused bits so you get a flat surface. Then you just silicone the new lens in place. The installation does require a bit of elbow grease if you're a perfectionist (like me) and want to get every last bit of the old lens out. If you're not a stickler, you could get away with just removing the easiest bits before gluing the new lens in I suppose. I've repaired my driver's side tail/brake lamp lens with one of these kits, and I can tell you the results are very very good. In fact, the driver's side lens looks so new and fresh, I'm actually thinking about replacing the passenger side even though it's not broken.

Actually, that would be perfect. I only have one broken lense section (red that wraps around...forget, but I think it is brake/tail). I will email you when I am on my home computer.

          Thanks,

          Mike

Have you tried these guys? I've got some lenses for my 740. Quality seems reasonable.

Ya, sorry, but those ebay ones are garbage. I bought a 740 lamp for my uncle and the "chrome" trim is a thin foil sticker that looks like it'll wash away with the first rain. I would avoid.

Not sure I get the response here? I was asking if the lights, like the ones you listed, are of good quality as many posts I have recently read complained about the Estonian or other aftermarket taillights. The first link was exactly what I was asking about...the second is also aftermarket and out of stock.

The problem is not finding taillights for sale it is distinguishing the good from the bad.

For accessory bushings, the amount of work involved is exactly the same with poly as with rubber. If you go with rubber, genuine Volvo is the ONLY way to go as the aftermarket ones last for mere months. FCP and IPD both sell URO brand poly bushings. The blue-green ones have held up okay thus far, unlike the yellow URO ones that FCP used to sell. Not sure I'd trust any URO poly suspension bushings, though, based on the craptastic quality of their rubber parts.

        Hi,

IPD sells blue/green urethane ones made URO that are around $5 a piece. I have used those and they are still holding up (it's only been about 1 year).

        I have ordered these:

        http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Engine-Accessory-Bushing-Heavy-Duty-Polyurethane-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQfitsZMakeQ3aVolvoQ7cModelQ3a240QQhashZitem5adf4694e6QQitemZ390293001446QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2734wt_941

They are almost identically the same as the ones from IPD-length, width, the only factor that is different is that these are more green than blue/green.

I have ordered parts from this place before-the only downside was that it took several weeks for them to ship. I ordered straight from their website though, when selling through Ebay they're probably much faster.

        Travis
