1990 245 no start help! ECU? 200

Ok, so my wagon died on me on my way home from work the other day.
I got towed home because I didn't feel like getting squished on the side of a busy highway.

Did some troubleshooting and found my in tank pump to be bum. Would run off main (undercar) pump when the fuses were jumped.

Ok, made a $300 order to FCP and just got it all in.
Replaced in tank pump and Fuel pump relay.

Still no worky.
Found main FI fuse under hood on driver's fender wall was shorted out and burnt. Replaced that.
I can get the car to run both pumps by jumping fuses. Car will run and run great when fuses are jumpered. Just will not run without jumper wire.

So, I have a perfectly running volvo, just can't get it to run by itself, it will only run with the brand new FCP fuel pump relay bypassed.

Now, I did some research and found that the Pink Label ECU may be to blame. Yes, you guessed it, I have the Pink label 561.

So, whaddya think? get the ECU? everything else is now replaced.

some advice would be great.

K

Yup, it was a faulty punk label ECU. I went ahead and installed a weatherproof 25 amp fuse holder, replaced in tank pump and fuel pump relay. While I was at it, I changes out all belts including timing belt and did a full tuneup!
Thanks to Dan Page for the sale of the ECU. shipped fast to get me on the road. Over 100 miles so far, so good. Great to be back at the helm of ol blue!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the ECU.

Have you checked OBD codes? When my ECU finally croaked in my '90, I got nothing out of the code reader. That clinched it for me. Fortunately, I already had a spare ECU....

Find a -951.

Found a 564 ecu from an 88 240.
Can I use this?

No, that's for LH 2.2. See the chart in the FAQ for the possible ones you can use:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineFIComputer.htm (scroll to bottom of page)

A -951 out of a 1993 is your best bet, since there are no "bad color" label variants of that one. Last time I checked, there were a couple of used ones for sale in the classifieds here. No reason to pay a few hundred $$ for a "rebuilt" one. My local junkyard sells them for $25 each--a great deal.

I'm shocked your old pink-label ECU lasted so long. The one in mine got replaced by the dealer about 18 years ago!!

A quick check on the ECU 200 1990

The known 561 failure is in grounding the pump relay coil for starting and running.

A grounded jumper wire whose free end is back-probed into Fuel Relay harness socket — so it contacts the Blue-Green wire terminal end — can sub for the normal ECU ground. If the car now starts and runs with the ground jumper in place, the ECU is failing.

Note that it's not safe to run like this. The ECU normally doesn't let fuel get pumped without "permission" from the Ignition CU — as a safety feature in case of an accident.

I would replace the pink label to upgrade a weak point. If it fixes your problem great, if not then its not a waste either.

If you are absolutely sure that the red wire from the positive battery post is supplying not only the necessary 12v but enough amperage to set the relay then I would think that the pink label 561 is at fault.

However, you must be sure that the there isn't enough resistance in the red wire to reduce the needed amperage. Remove and clean the connection at the battery. Check to see that corrosion has not started to migrate under the insulation right behind the connector. If you find any corrosion, cut off the connector and enough of the wire to get to clean copper. Solder on a new connector.

Make sure the fuse holder is not hiding any corrosion that would produce additional resistance. If you are still running the original fuse holder it would be best to replace it with one that has a cap that provides some protection. Cut out the old holder and solder in the new one.

Does the socket for the fuel injection relay show any damage due to overheating?

Once you are sure that the electrons have a super highway to the relay and the car will still only run with a jumper in place I think you need to replace the ECU. A failed pink label 561 is more than common. You may be the one of the last people to actually have one recently in service. Good luck.

Randy

Replace the fuel pump relay found above passenger's right foot. It's a rectangular white box, I find them at the junk yard and carry 3-4 in each car.
Good pluck

Pardon my ignorance guys, but what is the black box just ahead of the fuel pump relay? Oh yeah, I have one of the dreaded pink label ECUs too - it must be the best one made because I've got almost 250k on it.

It is the ICU for the ignition system, these almost never cause problems.
