Early 90's 740 turbo 700 1993

This car being advertised as a REDBLOCK ENGINE 4 CYLINDER Would this be the piston squirter model? There is so much stuff on hot side of block I can't see the bumps on side showing the different casting for oil galley. I'm looking to add to my Volvo fleet at this time a '93-'95 turbo 745. My 240 is now running so well I'm finding I have too much time on my hands. require a new project

To my knowledge 7 series ended in 92, while 9 series began in 91. So a 93 would be a 940. Part of my own list is, 90 740, (hit and gone) 91 745 (current) 92 745 (current) 93 940T (current) 95 940 (sold)
Most who do a lot with these, such as rebuild, hotrod, etc, say that the squirter block is on all 93 models. I have never heard anyone say their 93 did Not have squirters. A few have claimed that they existed on earlier models, and someone on TB says he has seen at least 10 92 motors with squirters.
As he is one of the most involved and respected Volvo performance people probably in the country, I'll take his word for it.
I can say that the castings are not a sure sign; apparently the castings were incorporated as early as 90, but the actual parts weren't in use til later.
However, it is possible to drill and install squirters in a block if the castings are present. They do seem to make the engines quieter and longer lasting.

"They do seem to make the engines quieter and longer lasting."

They do. My 1996 is so quiet, you could fall asleep waiting for the stoplights to change green.

TTBOMK The oil squirters were introduced in the B230FD (1994-1995 and any produced in 1993) and ultimately in the 1995 B230FT (lucky me). I don't think they made it into the 1994 B230FT, but I may be wrong. I'm rather certain you won't find them in a 1993 B230FT, at least standard North American production. Obviously looking at the casting as you're trying to do is the definitive approach. I recall seeing posts in the last few months on B230FD production and oil squirters, especially relating to California market production. Good luck with the search engine :-J

The 1993 and later automotive B230s had the squirters. Maybe the Penta motors, too. The picture is of a 1994 B230FT being re-assembled after being bored to the first oversize.

Engine castings used latec in the 1990 model year will have the bumps on the outside of the block, but no squirters. Volvo was just planning ahead.

Thanks, John. By 1993 B230s having squirters, do you mean both B230F and B230FT as I assume you do? And just when I thought I finally had it all figured out. Keeping track of this topic is trickier than I thought. I've attributed some of the anomalies in later B230 production to the California market, but obviously I shouldn't. Some days I wonder if various Volvo plants started pushing out 900s with any batch of red blocks they could get their hands on in the later RWD years. From what I've seen you can't even trust simple little things like engines, spoked wheels and sunroofs to be consistent within a year.

Yes, both NA and turbo motors starting in 1993 have the squirters. They are L blocks. The tag on the timing belt cover has the L on it, like this:

They can also be identified by the curved tooth timing belt, unless the timing gears have been changed to square tooth.

My V-8 project in progress is a '93 245. I removed the original motor and partially disassembled it--it was a squirter. -- Dave
