Front wipers stopped working -- how to test? 200 1988

A little advice if possible.

About a week ago, my front wipers on Gretta, my '88 240 wagon, started making an awful noise, then stopped working entirely. No movement or sound like the motor is trying in any position/speed. So the short and the long of it is I want to make sure what part to replace. The column selector is working fine to activate washer fluid and rear wiper, and the fuse looks fine (headlights are working too).

I took a multimeter to the connector and didn't seem to get anything across any of the wires, nor from any of the wires to ground (bolt head attaching wiper motor to car body) but am wondering if anyone knows exactly how to test this connector? Also, any simple way to test the relay (I am not even sure if I can FIND the relay; I looked and was unsure which it was).

The Haynes manual isn't helping me much here, as it's diagrams are a bit hard to follow in this area

Front wipers stopped working -- how to test? 200 1988

Alright, just an update. The Local Pick N Pull had an '87 sedan which I managed to cannibalize for a motor and relay. After both have been replaced, I am still getting no movement. There IS voltage coming out of the plug (tested with a multimeter, so mu only thought is that it must be the switch, which appears to be riveted together :(

    Any thoughts?

If your wiper motor was making a terrible noise most likely it's that motor. They are a constant failure, well at least for me. There is a ground contact under one of the bolts that needs to be clean and making good contact. But based on your comment about a bad noise, its not the ground.

I have tested the connector before when the motor quit working, every single time its been that motor.

But here are couple of things you can check,

First the frame of the motor should read less that 2 ohms to chassis

Yellow Wire is hot all the time, that comes right off fuse 2.

Wrote a truth table down and can't find the dang thing. But bottom line is that is yellow is hot and the brown or green wire are hot when you flip the switch and you have a good ground and the wipers don't move. Get a motor.

    Regards,

    Paul

Don't know if you've ever tried it, but those wiper motors are normally repairable. If you can't easily find a good used one then disassemble the gear case, remove the motor, pry out the side magnets stuck to the inside of the motor housing (one of them will likely be dislodged -that's the problem), clean up all the grunge and corrosion, re-insert the magnets lining them up as best you can, add a bit of lubricant, lubricate the gear case with a bit of silicone grease, clean up the contacts and the back side of the outer plate. When disassembling the gear case try not to bend the contacts too much and remember how they go on the sides of the cam gear. Tweak the outer contact a bit so it will make good contact with the cover plate (most important). Make sure the cover plate plastic gasket doesn't get in the way.
