Service socket 700 1990

I know my 240's have the "service socket for cranking starter motor" located in the engine bay against the firewall. I don't remember seeing this socket on my '90 760GLT. I never needed it - until now. Car is down hard away from home in a high crime area (Wal-Mart is nearby) and it's dark. Figure it has a starter motor/solenoid or ignition switch issue. Can't get it to crank but all dash lights illuminate. Battery is still strong. Taking a risk to let it sit over night and do some tests at break of dawn tomorrow morning.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

This photo I think shows the socket along the inside of the driver's side fender. Right? Haven't looked there, but will tomorrow morning.

        Yes, that's the location.

Note that the circuit from there to the starter solenoid does go thru the "Start Inhibit" switch if you have auto tranny.

But before the SI switch, it ties to the normal Ignition switch start terminal. So you can also use the Service Socket to test for cranking voltage from the Ignition switch, possibly the source of a no-crank problem.

I got to the car at day break. Attempted a crank. No joy. Beat on the starter motor and solenoid again. No joy. Found in that engine bay location two empty female sockets, one blue and one brown. Found the brown one first and kept looking for a blue one. Then I found it under a harness in that area. I was puzzled to see that it had two ports. Hmmmm, said I, I was expecting a single blade receptacle as on the 240's B230Fs. Leaving well enough alone, I attempted to check the neutral safety switch function with wiggles and several shifting movements in and out of PARK. No crank and no joy. I then ran a wire, clipping one end to the solenoid's terminal 50 and the other touching the battery's + terminal. No crank, no click and no joy other than to feel that the ignition switch/wiring to terminal 50 on the solenoid was not at fault and that the fault was with a failed starter motor.

Several inches of snow are forecast, a decent, reputable shop is two doors down (with a 1984 245DL parked outside) and I surrendered. After a short AAA tow, and a few hours, the shop confirmed it - a bad starter. So, thanks for the support. Any info on that service plug would be appreciated.

Yeah, it's the blue double connector with just one wire.

I just made this screen shot of a Mitchell pdf. Then photobucket reduced it.
Hope you can make it out. The pink wire to the ECU is just to keep it informed I guess.

Thanks, great schematic. The blue socket was tightly tucked behind a harness and the light was still dim so I missed seeing the single wire. Got distracted from it when I pried enough of the socket up to feel two ports.

Have you tried starting it by holding key in the start position and moving the shifter (perhaps a bad neutral safety switch)

Have you tried a couple of sharp raps with a hammer on the starter? (starter going south)

How about a wire from battery positive to solenoid? (defective ignition switch/neutral safety switch)

Sorry I do not know about the existence of a service socket on the 7/9 cars.

    Randy

Got to the car at first light this AM. Rapped on the starter motor and solenoid. No crank. Checked out the neutral safety switch with wiggles and shifts, No crank. Then clipped a wire on solenoid's terminal 50 and the other end to battery's + terminal. Still no crank. With this last test, figured the ignition switch/wires to solenoid were ok and that the neutral safety switch was ok, too. Likely, the starter motor, then, was the fault. I wimped out on having the car towed home. Heavy snow is expected tonight, a reputable shop is a few doors down (an '84/'85 245DL was parked at the business) and it was a short tow. A few hours later, the shop confirmed it was a faulty starter. Thank you for the tips.

I tried rapping the starter and solenoid with a broom handle to no avail. I also tried to make contact between the B+30 lug and field winding strap, M, with a heavy shafted screwdriver. Got sparks but no start. The other two suggestions are good ones and I'll try that in the morning. This was a wife rescue mission and she had a schedule to keep, so I had little time to continue other than put her and her accessories into a 245. Thanks for the tips, Randy.
