The shift console light (automatic) was not working on my daughters 240. I took to the cover off and found the lamp holder hanging loose with a white wire\ red stripe on one contact and a 1" piece of a heavier red wire attached to the other contact. There was no sign of a wire to attach the amputated red wire to.

What should I be looking for if I am looking for a place to attach this wire?

My 1991 240 automatic had same PRNDL light out. I lifted the cover and found same wiring.

The white with red stripe wire is hot +12vDC when light switch is ON.

The 1" long "red" wire is actually red heat shrink insulation over the end of a black ground wire about 8 inches long that runs around front and to right side of shift lever and is grounded with another black wire to a phillip's head screw.

I replaced the 8" black wire ground wire with 10" black wire. Fixed.

Must be a common wire stretching when in PARK problem.

Trying installing new longer ground wire.

Thanks! Where did you find the bulb? Is it something you can pick up Advance Auto?

How does it attach to the shift lever? I have the little right angle bracket with a hole in it, but, nothing else.

I also have the Bentley manual and can't find anything on it.

The bulb fits in the black plastic bulb socket/holder that the wires attach to.

That bulb socket then slides straight up from the bottom and friction fits into the tube of the right angle bracket, light shines up through hole.

Advance Auto may have bulbs. I can take mine apart tomorrow and get bulb number if needed. If tube is missing I can send you one after I pull one at wrecking yard next week. Going there anyway.
