Distributor Cap and Rotor 700 1990

I am attempting to tune up our 1990 740 GL w/Rex-Regina ignition. Our mechanic suggests work that can be done by a DIYer to us and said the rotor and cap and plug wires need to be changed soon.

This Distributor cap is the type that is in the rear of the engine compartment by the firewall.

I removed both the cap and rotor and replaced them as well as the plug wires.

The car ran before I did this work and now the car turns over but will not start.

A few questions I have are:

1.Does the rotor need to be in a certain position like other cars I've seen and if so is there some mark that I should see. (AKA is it at 12 o clock)

2. Normally when you switch plug wires you hear a misfire type of sound but I am not hearing that. could this be from switching the actual plug wires. I know I have the right plug to the right cap but the actual wires might be switched.

3. How fine are the tolerances on the spinning rotor. It seems as though I have put the rotor on as tight as I can push it back on the shaft.

Okay Thanks to everyone for the ideas/ suggestions. After taking apart the work I had originally done I notice the new Distributor cap was cracked. I was puzzled and so I looked at the rotor that I had put on as well as a few other things. Turns out the cracked cap was caused by the rotor not being seated all the way on. Now I read many places you should hear a click or pop and that lets you know its on all the way. The first rotors key was defective and after closer examination there was plastic that would not allow the rotor to bottom out. Bottom line a new cap and rotor later the car fires up.

On a side note it is idling a little slower than before new cap, rotor plug wires but we'll see if it evens out after a longer drive.

Thanks and I hope my problems help someone else avoid the same. Check your parts carefully.

Yes, Teh Rotor has to face teh same way as teh old one. It is 'keyed' so it should only fit on one way.

The wires MUST also go on the same way the old ones came off. i.e. The wire from the first Spark Plug must go to the same spot on the Cap as the old one did.

If everything is seated and installed correct and still not running.
    Check for spark.
Take a look at Engine Speed Sensor/Impulse Sensor it could have been disturbed and lost contact, problems with this will cause a no-spark,no-start.

Make sure the coil wire on the bottom of the distributor is fully seated. BTDT

rotor can only go on one way. You got the plug wires wrong. Look here.

The rotor must fit all the way on to the shaft.the shaft has a slot near the end and the rotor has a nub that MUST fit into this slot or the car most likely will not start.
The only difference in wires is the length but maintaining the correct firing order is critical for optimum performance.
