Throttle body cleaning question 200 1989

Is there a specific torque on that?... Also, should i go the cheapo FCP Throttle Body Gasket, or the Dealer route?

Throttle body cleaning question 200 1989

If you eat breakfast cereal, save the box and cut a new one out. Its quick and easy, not to mention free! I have used this method for years and have found that Corn Flakes and Wheaties boxes both do just fine for years. They are also typically reusable if you have to remove the TB again at a later date.

ps. Sorry if that is too old school, but it works great!

I got my gasket from eeuroparts. I heard that sometimes you can just reuse the gasket.

I'm going to be cleaning mine soon, any do's or don'ts?

If you are doing this for teh first time. The Nut closest to the Throttle Positioning Switch is a bit tricky. I took a Cheapo Open End wrench and ground it down so it fits in there without disturbing the Switch.
I have also used the same gasket many times. I just recently bought a new gasket while I had in an order for a mess of other stuff.
These three Nuts are not muscled down tight. Not sure what the correct torque is but you can't get a torque wrench in that one area anyway. I'm guessing around 20 ftlbs
You may want to take off the Brass fittings and clean out the small holes that lay beneath the fitting. Loosen them before taking the Throttle body off the car. just easier then trying to hold it in your hand and loosen.

Throttle body cleaning question 200 1989

        Good info Tony.
I'm doing the TB on my '89 245 LH2.4 EZK for the first time. An ounce of prevention ( checking AF box before attempting to start after sitting for a few months) would have saved me lbs and a few hrs of cure. Mice had shredded the air filter, and on starting it last week lots of paper was sucked into the AMM. Within 1/2 minute it was running rough and "check engine" light was on.

I removed and cleaned the AMM w specific AMM spray and tweezers. I've found that the mounting bolt from the bracket on the wheel well has punched a clean hole thru the plastic/bakelite body of the AMM. the thick rubber washer wasn't in place to limit the depth of the bolt. The engine had run Ok for a few yrs, but I could never get it to pass emissions. I plan to plug/seal this hole from the inside with a silicone gasket sealer and smooth it flush to the inside wall. Does this seem OK? I could fill it w epoxy if better.

I have a clean matching accordian pipe off another 240.

I took off the Throttle Body and cleaned it w TB cleaner. Of the 2 brass vac fittings on top, the larger diam fttg is clear - I can blow thru it. The smaller diam fitting (w larger 14mm hex) is not clear after 5 applications of TB cleaner into it. The fitting is unmoveable w a box wrench and strong hand force while holding it flat on the benchtop. Otherwise I'm ready to reassemble. Advice on this fitting removal and cleaning?

I have a new TB gasket, plus I put the shopvac hose to the manifold opening to clear any more shredded AF. It seemed clean.

While I have it this far disassembled I'm going to install a new oil separator and a new flame trap, I'll clean the old ones another time for re-use. It's 3 degrees F and I'm working outside!

This AMM is Bosch # 0 280 212 007 I have another w same # that I replced a few yrs ago (not sure if its good).Have the test procedure from Lucid if I need to. I also have a clean AMM Bosch # 0 280 212 016. Not sure about compatibility for the LH2.4 EZK

I'll run the OBD codes after reassembly and startup. If I hadn't neglected to check for mice I would have put off the other maint and I wouldn't have found the problems mentioned above.
I love driving (and maintaining) these old 245s. Love this BrickBoard too. Thanks to all - throw some $ into the pot. BB is worth it!

Here's a favorite image of a Mouse Motel in an airbox, a BMW motorcycle "barn special" in this case. Moral of the story: Block entry points with screen or metal mesh.

Hmm, I am pretty sure the AMM xx016 is the correct one for your car. I'm surprised to hear the 007 was on the car, not sure if the 007 is the right one.

Just a heads up. The brass nipple you cannot get off; The Hole below that nipple, in the throttle body, is not nearly as large as the hole that is in the nipple. AND it's not centered with the hole in the nipple. Sticking a small wire down through the nipple wont tell you anything. It might be cleared but you don't know it. Can you see the hole looking from inside the throttle body?

Tony, You know your stuff. the 007 AMM was a swap-in a few yrs ago.
I can see both holes inside the AMM, and again you're correct, the smaller hole isn't in direct line under the nipple and I can't blow thru it, yet. Is it possible this nipple and hose to or from the charcoal gas reservoir canister is controlled (open/closed) by the AMM electronically? Art B pointed out both hoses connect to the canister.
I posted my prev post in this thread with some more info and details in a new separate thread. Maybe I'll copy your reply to me and this one to you, and paste them into my newer thread titled "mice chewed air filter, cleaning AMM & TB" after Art B's reply.
            Thanks again.

Nothing magical about those holes. They are just vacuum points.
If you look into the Throttle Body ( Air in side), You can see the two holes just at the Lip of the Throttle Plate. Is there anyway you can open the plate and get a small piece of wire up in that hole??
I bet if you mount the Throttle body back on the intake, you can crack that Nipple lose wit a 6 point socket. Holding it in your hands, between your legs,or with a friend just doesn't always get-it-done.

I'll poke up into the clogged port w a fine wire and spray again w TB cleaner. I'll reinstall TB onto manifold then apply the Force thru a 6 point, clean it again. Thanks for the info Tony.
