1980 260 TWO DOOR 200 1980

I know someone with a 1980 260. He said the shop cant get it to run. The car starts and runs then stalls out after it gets warm. Its not over heating. He wants to sell it but he told me I would have to tow it home. He said the part that needs to be replaced is 1,100 new and i think he said its the fule disributer. The car has 40,000 miles and is in great shape. What do you think its worth?
Thanks all.

260's are not all that desirable because the engine had some durability problems with the camshaft. The six cylinder engines weren't that much more powerful than the four cylinders. A 31 year old car with 40K on it might look good, but mechanically there could be a lot of problems lurking beneath the surface, such as deteriorated rubber parts, a contaminated fuel system, a clogged and corroded cooling and heating system, just to name a few. The car isn't worth much if it doesn't run, I'm thinking generally less than 1K. If you HAVE to have it, let a trusted mechanic look it over very carefully. That 1100 dollars for the fuel distributor is the tip of the iceberg.

40,000 on that old of a car! That is hard to fathom to start with. I'll bet that if its true, it has had some bad fuel laying up in it some time or another.

The engine must be leaning out when it gets warmer to make it stall.

I wonder if you don't have a vacuum leak that is still a liitle too small to make things worse right away. Then it could be that fuel distributors air flap, that is gummed up and sticking. I believe this is a K jet system.

There are things like an 0-2 sensor, frequency valve, non closing auxillary air valve or the connecting electrical relay system that can do these things too.

Before throwing money at the problem, do some maintenance.

Phil

Does the car restart after stalling while still warm. If not that would be the time to start checking to see what is not working.

Hi,

I have a fuel distributor that I know operates for a 260.

I would sell, but at a high price, because there is likely something else that is causing the car to stall. It’s the same technique the mechanic is using :)
