Regina O2 sensor/poor mileage 700 1992

1992 745 b230f- 185K

This is a project car that I have no records for. I have 500+ miles on it since installing a transmission, a replacement head, and the exhaust system.

I am currently chasing the cause of poor mileage. 19-20mpg is what I am seeing in combined driving.

I ran two compression tests and all cylinders show 190# To my untrained eye the plugs look like they are living in a fuel rich environment:

Photobucket

I did some reading in the FAQ's on O2 sensors I find that the Regina system does not use the Bosch sensor. That is what is in there because it came along with the used exhaust system I installed from a b234f.

I went back to the old converter/pipe to extract the old sensor and found that it is a Bosch as well- someone had installed the wrong sensor in the car (this setup also returned 19mpg)

So do you think two similar (but wrong application) O2 sensors are perhaps responsible for the poor mileage?

The proper sensor (3517394) is a bit pricey for the role this car is playing right now. Anybody know of any generic sensor replacement for the Regina cars?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Randy

I bought the correct NTK/NGK O2 sensor from Amazon after finding a Bosch in mine. I got roughly 200 miles from filling it up until the nozzle clicked off to the half tank mark on the gauge. In 65-70 degree weather.

I did not see a dramatic increase in fuel economy with the NTK sensor but I wanted the car "right". There is a Motorweek road test of a '91 940SE on Youtube and although it is a turbo model they only got a combined 20 MPG out of it. I assume the turbo does not have the locking torque converter but that should only make a difference at 45 MPH and up when it locks.

I don't have the link to the video but just type in MW 940 on Youtube and it will come up.
    Nice car..

Sounds like nice compression numbers to me!

They look pretty nice (and fairly new) to me too. The only one that looks a little off is the one farthest left. It looks like maybe they weren't torqued down all the way, or had some oil creep onto the threads from leaks on the head. Anyone know where oil on the threads like that would come from? I wouldn't be at all concerned about those plugs.

Randy, I ordered this Walker as a replacement for my wife's Regina '93 940. Her mileage went from 18 to about 20 in town driving.

Amazon sells it for $60 some. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/Walker-250-23811-Three-Oxygen-Sensor/dp/B000CLQR9A

Part # is Walker 250-23811. You might be able to find it elsewhere.

(This is the sensor that FCP Groton shows on their website for the Regina system. Good luck)

      Rob,

Thanks, the Walker # I found for this car was 250-23033; it is available on Amazon for $88.

        Randy,
I think that walker 23033 is NOT the titania type you need. Per FCP's picture the 23031 IS the right one (black, white, and RED wires), but it's a repackaged NGK 25002, which is the one to look for.

Until Denso came into the Titania O2 market a year or so ago, I believe NGK/NTK was the sole manufacturer.

I probably just demonstrated exactly how Regina cars end up with the wrong sensor in them (grin).

Thanks to you Lucid as well as Rob for keeping me on the correct path...

Many parts houses' catalogues are in error in terms of specifying the correct O2 for the Regina cars. You should be using the titania type which is significantly more expensive, which is likely another reason that the Reginas end up with the wrong sensor somewhere along the line. I believe NGK 25002 is the correct part. Amazon.com, of all places, currently has them listed for ~$84. That's the cheapest I think I've ever seen them. I've never had to replace one as this type literally lasts forever - or nearly so.

Thanks for the information. Yes, the NGK is the best deal, however...

Reason enough to see if anything might be available at the pick n pull assuming the winter weather takes a break soon.

Hello, You might be waisting your time. The O2 sensor is mounted on the converter. Most Pick and pulls remove the cat before putting it out in the yard. Call first to find out if the converter has indeed been removed. Might save you some time. Pauli

That sounded like good advice so I gave them a call. The young woman on the phone assured me that the exhaust systems were in fact intact on the cars.

I arranged my schedule to swing past there today only to find that all of the converters are cut off of the cars before being set in the yard!!
