I replaced the mechanical fan on my car with a 2 speed electrical fan from a 940 Volvo. Had to cut the shroud down slightly - the 940 radiator is a bit wider than the narrower 240 radiator (that the intercooler reaches around). But then it fit right on like it belonged there.
Wired up the 2 speed realy like thus:
- low speed is triggered either by the A/C compressor engaging, or by the ECU (it's a programmable Megasquirt) when the coolant temp gets 5 degrees over the thermostat temp.
- high speed is triggered by a 'dumb' temp switch in the radiator - it comes on at about 230 degrees.
I've practically never heard the high speed clicking on while driving around, maybe a few times when it was really hot and I was using the A/C. It's wired to be active with the car shut off as well, which is nice because it can de a few cool-down cycles and it helps keep the underhood temps down on a hot shut-off. Helps cool the turbo and related manifold/downpipe off in a quicker manner, instead of just baking the wiring and underside of the hood.
