How to keep Volvo tool from slipping out of Harmonic Balancer?? 700 1992

With my ongoing saga of replacing the head on my daughter's 92 740, I have concluded that the no-start is due to timing issues. When the marks align on the cam, the marks on the crank are not aligned.
The problem is that the harmonic balancer has slots that allow the Volvo Hold-down tool to pop out. Even if I use another pair of slots ( and rotate the HB some), it stills slips out. I used a short piece of 2X4 between the HB and my breaker bar to keep the tool engaged and I was able to remove the HB. But now to torque in the bolt for the HB, I need to have the timing alignment spot on and immobile.
I have read of some filing that is needed to be done to the slots on the HB. Does anyone have an idea of where to file and what type of file to use (I assume a bastard file, of course). Any one have pictures?
Thanks,
el raidman

Aftermarket harmonic balancers have different hole patterns: the tool does slip out. I used a file to sharpen the corners of the balancer so the tool stays in place. A Dremel would also work.

    Raidman,

Install the harmonic balancer first, worry about the timing later. You seem to be confused in the fact that the hold-down tool is not meant to exact timing, but merely to hold the pulley while you torque it.

To emphasize the issue, time the marks after you torque the pulley.

Tomorrow,I will file the slots straight, then install the harmonic balancer (as per your instructions), then after the HB is tight, I will adjust the timing marks on both the crank and the camshaft to the proper marks. Upon doing this, I will then install the timing belt. It should be OK then, correct?
      Thanks, G'Man!!

Remember the HB is rubber mounted and will sometimes seperate, therefore throwing marks off. Verify it is not seperated before re-installing.
