Rattly fan clutch 140-160 1973

When I got the Yellow Peril, my 73 145E, running at the end of the summer, I got
a lot of noise from the fan. Assuming it was the water pump (fairly low mileage) headed
south. So I replaced it with a new one that I had in my culch heap. Got the SAME noise.
The fan and clutch are aluminum. probably from a 240/B21. I have a couple other fans
and clutches around and conclude that to get rid of the rattling noise I should change
the fan clutch. Other than either installing it and running it (which involves draining
the coolant to pull the radiator) and feeling for slop, is there any easy way to tell
if a fan clutch will be noisy?

    George if the fan you have now is the many bladed steel one, with the hub that bolts on with one central bolt and a "dog" drive, then yes they can make a noise just like the water pump. They will develop play just like a water pump - the trick is trying to hold the pulley and get the differential movement.
    I'd replace it with the fixed plastic type fan.
    Feeling cheap one day I machined a boss to eliminate the clutch and drive the big fan all the time. I think I got tinnitus from that idea.....

      The fan I have on now is an unpainted aluminum-bladed fan.
      I do have the dog drive. The bolt is good and tight so there seems to be no relative
      motion between the hub and the inner race of the fan clutch.
      My 69 164 has a direct drive fan - it is fairly noisy but doesn't rattle.
      BTW I ALWAYS feel cheap, laddie, er, ah that's THRRrrrifty!
      Don't have a fixed plastic-bladed fan but do have a couple yellow metal ones,
      one good and one with bent blades (and matching radiator).
      I was thinking of using the clutch off one of those and either the aluminum fan
      (if it fits) or the better of the yellow ones.

        George,

        If I am not wrong, the yellow fan is for the 73/74 140 series. Mine came with that, and I don't remember having the fan replaced. Maybe a clutch or two over the past 36 years.

          You are indeed right about that. I had put in what appeared to be the best fan
          and clutch
          that I had, which I believe was from a later car but fit OK.
          Apparently appearances were deceiving. I'll probably go back to the yellow one or
          at least the clutch from the yellow one. If the aluminum blade fits I may put it on.

          'Tis a fine state indeed - I've passed a couple of afternoons shakin' doon a net
          o' wee Christmas lights, replaced 30 wee bulbs and the beggar still won't light!
          I could buy a new one for less than $3......

            Assuming you were too cheap (let's call a spade a spade) to run your lights more than 30 minutes a day over the holidays, you do realize that 98% of the time your dead lights were serving you perfectly well as a net. I too have spent way, way too many hours trying to fault trace burnt lights. Even conned the better half into holding one of the meter test leads. One string still eludes me. Later still, one of them thar newfangled LED strings started misbehaving. I succumbed to modern marketing and have declared those a terminal loss. Thought I'd wait for the Xmas clearances, but nary a string to be had even though crates of recalled Westinghouse lights probably sat out back. Oh well, maybe next year.

            Oh, and if you're going to go for a fixed fan (as I did in my 74 140), you'll theoretically gain a fraction of power and fuel economy if you use the yellow plastic blades that will naturally flatten out at high revs. I'd call that viscous fan lite. You could also hang around the garage sales and pick up one of those large box fans then take the blade out and lag bolt it to the pulley.
