US 242 GT mechanical differences? 200


I am confused about the mechanical differences between the U.S. spec. 242 GT and 240's coupes. Does the U.S. version have a higher compression engine, suspension upgrade or was the GT merely a trim difference (racing stripes, orange stripe on seats, ect.)?

    No engine difference. Suspension upgrades in '78 and especially '79. 78s may (may not) have R-sport front springs and lower strut braces. 79s (best year) will have R-sport front springs and upper strut braces and the French struts (I forget). Sway bars will be 21 mm front 23 mm rear. 80 GT is standard springs and suspension, like the turbos that succeeded it. Although, as I recall the sways were 23 mm front and 21 mm rear.

      Pretty sure the GT's had limited slip differentials.... mine did.

        The LSD was a dealer installed option for all Volvos of that time, at least in Canada. My 79 GT (bought new) did not have a LSD.
        That car was a peach, and I still miss it....

          I loved mine, too. It was a little slow on the takeoff, but it handled great for the era and once it was up to speed, it could cruise all day at high speeds. Very distinctive looking, too.

        I don't think so, have to check mine, but I think it was an ooption. That is my post above attributed to JSBB by the board.
