The headliner in my 740 sedan w/ sun roof is in pretty poor shape. I found a very good one in the local PYP yard and was thinking about a swap but just how do you get the darn thing out of the car after loosening all the fasteners. Do the front seats have to be removed??

The material you use has to be able to stretch and fit the contours of the headliner.

I'd re-do yours. Or pull one out of a JY car, redo the JY liner, then pull yours out and toss it.
I did it and it was awful, even with 2 people. Ended up cracking the cardboard stuff near the rear view mirror.
If I had to do it again, I would absolutely remove both driver's and passenger's seats, and remove it from a rear door, unless it's a wagon.
The sunroof top panel comes out, then the entire track can be removed. Don't open or shut it after removing the top panel and realignment isn't too bad.

As long as you're going through the effort of pulling an putting another one on you car, why not just redo your's? The junkyard one may soon fall off.
I recently did my wagon and used farbic from JoAnn fabric with a coupon and the spray from Walmart for a very good price.

I've done quite a few of these. You should have to people for this job. I have done one by myself, but there is too much risk of breaking the headliner in the sunroof area.
Start by removing the visors, side trim, dome light, the clip above the dome light, sunroof mechanism trim, and anything else in the way.
The headliner goes out the right front door, diagonally. The left side of the headliner goes against the lower front corner of the door frame, and the right side goes against the upper rear corner of the door frame. You'll want to have the front passenger seat to the rear, and fully reclined. The driver's seat will have to be reclined a little. The headliner will have to be bowed a little. I sometimes take the door gasket off for a little more clearance, and you can also remove the right console side, but that is not necessary.
To replace the sunroof headliner, you'll have to remove the sunroof and pull the mechanism out the top.
Respond to this post with your email address, and I'll send you a file on replacing the headliner.
I've done replaced headliners in five 700/900 sedans, and one wagon.

John, if you've done 5 of these you are a miracle worker.
Re: sunroof headliner, "...you'll have to remove the sunroof and pull the mechanism out the top."
I have seen claimed that it's possible to replace it alone, which I believe to be false. (insane, bizarre, from Mars, other similar descriptors). Having taken one out I think that replacing it requires removal of the sunroof assembly from the car, as it's much larger than the sunroof.
Your thoughts?
I have the one for sale in decent shape btw, the car it was destined for was wrecked.

The only practical way to get the sliding headliner part of the sunroof out of the car is to take it out through the sunroof opening, from the top. It comes out with the sunroof mechanism.
If you drop the sunroof drip pan from below, you still can't remove the sliding headliner panel. It won't slide out the back of the mechanism without surgery.

I am confused; is there any way you can illuminate? I have seen others say this also, and I cannot imagine how that can be. The sunroof headliner I have, that I took out of a mid 80s 7 series, is quite a bit larger than the sunroof, and it cannot go in or out through that hole.

The sunroof headliner comes out the top with the sunroof mechanism from the top. I've done about seven that way.
I have a file on how to do it on my old desk top computer. If I can find it, I'll send it to you if you reply with your email address.

"..If you drop the sunroof drip pan from below, you still can't remove the sliding headliner panel. It won't slide out the back of the mechanism without surgery..."
On the one and only headliner I did, I removed the inner sunroof panel via the dropped rear end of the pan. I found this method to be fairly simple and I didn't have to go through a sunroof re-alignment process when putting it back together. The trickiest part is separating the inner sunroof panel from the sunroof itself. First you'll need to disconnect the springs under the rear edge of the sunroof with the sunroof open in the "vent" position - I believe this is detailed in the 700/900 FAQ's. Then close the sunroof down flat. To separate the inner panel.... As i recall it requires significant upward pressure on the inner panel combined with an authoritative yank backward. Once the two pieces are separated, you can unscrew the pan all except a couple of screws along the front edge to keep the pan aligned with the roof. To support the rear end of the pan so that it doesn't drop down too much, loop a length of rope or cord under the pan, out both rear doors, and tie it together over the roof of the car. This will allow the rear of the pan to drop about 5 inches - not enough to cause serious bending along the front edge which is still screwed to the roof. Then slide the inner sunroof panel to the rear of the pan. When it hits the rear of the pan, reach in over the rear of the pan and lift the inner sunroof panel up over the edge of the pan. The tracks in the pan that the sunroof slides back in, have openings in the last couple inches to allow this.

Good luck!
