Driveshaft yoke phase/ alignment - in plane or? 200

I'm trying to find a vibration in my 91 244. More on that in a separate message.

In checking the driveshaft I saw that the driveshaft yokes (the farthest forward and farthest rearward) were perpendicular to each other.

This is how I thought they were supposed to be and how I've always done them. I call this "in phase".

But just in case I checked shop manuals: Bentley and Haynes show them to in the same plane. Haynes shows a picture w/ an X through a perpendicular arrangement.

Back at the driveshaft I saw that the stamped (etched?) factory arrows were lined up as they should be.

Are the manuals wrong or am I missing something?

Here is a picture of a driveshaft correctly assembled:

Yes, OK, I see now. The yoke at 5 and the yoke at 6 need to be in line "in the same plane".

My Haynes manual (1998 ed ISBN 1 56392 136 7) shows on p 8-7 sec 13 fig 12.6 the rear part of the shaft - not the whole shaft as I'd thought.

Thanks top all for the good comments

The illustrations in Haynes and Bentley are correct. It is Bentley the has the pic with the 'X'. Maybe some Haynes editions have the same illustration. I don't see it in mine.

I think you must be missing something. Look at it again.

I once put a the rear part of the driveshaft back 180° off. The imbalance was very noticable at low speeds, i.e. accelerating from a stop but it diminished with speed to the point where it was unnoticable. I don't know if that is typical for all such situations but it was my experience.

      Thanks for the comments.

Before I knew about the requisite alignment I had a 240 w/ a vibration ~30-60. After a lot of fussing w/ other things I found that the yokes were a few splines off. Set it correctly and the car was smooth from then on.

Most Volvo driveshafts are in two pieces.
They are each in plane but perpendicular to each other.
I have a pic of driveshaft assembly out of a manual in the gallery but can't get the
gallery to show it to me so I can post it in my reply.
It is in Walrus3 Tech pictures.

I have given the wrong answer 200

    Hello,

SOME OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS INCORRECT!!

PLEASE REFER TO MY LATER POSTING ON DRIVESHAFT ALIGNMENT!!

AFAIK, Volvo stupidly never marked their driveshafts.

    The manuals are correct.

All the flanges that are welded to both sets of tubes should be parallel.

Unfortunately you can be assemble the driveshaft 2 ways with the flanges parallel but only 1 is correct.

      Correct driveshaft alignment information!! 200

      Hello,

I have misspoken(written) on the driveshaft alignment issue and I need to clarify!

I was correct when I said that Volvo did NOT mark their driveshafts from the factory.

And that you can visually assemble the driveshaft correctly 2 ways.

So you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right if the 2 piece driveshaft is separated without being marked!

But I was WRONG about how to correctly assemble the driveshaft!!

I hope the following will straighten things out!!

The proper way to align the driveshaft halves visually is to imagine that the splined male half of the rear driveshaft is part of the front half with the u-joint flanges parallel.

The does make the 2 welded flanges of the rear driveshaft half to be perpendicular to the 1 welded flange on the front side of the front driveshaft half.

I AM EXTREMELY SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION I MAY HAVE CAUSED!!

Eric, I thought I might add my 2 cents as reading instructions that include words like perpendicular and parallel and "in phase" tend to make me dizzy. I try to explain things like this in a more visual way---form a U shape with your right hand thumb and index finger--do the same with your left hand---bring the U's together to represent the yokes of a complete U-joint. With a two piece driveshaft the most forward yoke and the most rearward yoke should form a U-joint when "joined". -- Dave

Some Volvo driveshafts are indexed. The 44.5 mm ø driveshafts that I have looked at are not, not that I have seen every example. It makes me think they started this sometime during 240 production.

These pics are of a 50.8 mm ø driveshaft from an '84.

oh, man. Now I've got to get under mine and check everything out. I marked everything prior to dissassembly, but you guys have me wondering now....

i have a related post in the 200 forum as well about a horrible vibration.

Yes, this is exactly how mine is marked. And after cleaning someone put a contracting dot of paint behind the arrows to make the arrows more noticeable.
